This position is part of a team that is responsible for the evaluation, administration, maintenance, and expansion of the City's mission-critical network infrastructure, including, but not limited to: LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi, Unified Communications, Network Security, Virtual Infrastructure and Backup and Disaster Recovery systems.
Major Duties

Provides initial support for desktop computers, laptops, printers, projectors, library automation technology, phones and phone network servers, and other technology; troubleshoots and repairs software and hardware problems. Part of a three-person service desk team.

Installs and supports new technology equipment; maintains equipment inventory in a digital IT asset management solution.
Configures and maintains the Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management
System.

Generates reports and statistics for presentation to staff and supervisors.

Maintains knowledge of networks; assists with network monitoring and troubleshooting; installs and maintains network operating systems on network servers.

Assists with evaluating and obtaining quotes for technology equipment and software; makes recommendations.

Assists in training coworkers in the utilization of software and hardware resources.

Interacts with users to determine technology solutions to problems and improve efficiency.

Performs related duties as assigned by the Chief Information Officer.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Entry level knowledge of server and workstation hardware and troubleshooting abilities.

Entry level knowledge of switch, hub, and cabling design, configuration, and maintenance.

Entry level knowledge of system and network design.

Entry level knowledge of TCP/IP protocol, and wireless communication protocols such as RDLAP and EDACS.

Entry level knowledge of basic programming and scripting language (i.e., Windows scripting host, Unix shell programming, and VB).

Proven skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex computer hardware and software.

Proven skill in time prioritization and management.

Proven skill in troubleshooting and problem solving.

Experienced skill in the operation of computer equipment.

Experienced in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and entry level competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the information technology or computer science.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar Information Technology position for one to two years.

Supplemental Information

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Information Technology Director assigns work in terms of very general instruction and guidelines. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include technical manuals, user specifications, supervisory instructions, federal, state, and city laws, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied technical duties. Frequently-changing computer technologies and the need to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist with the performance of help desk, systems analysis, design, and maintenance duties. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective provision of computer information services to all city departments.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, and consultants.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or computer table.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office or a computer room, outdoors, and in automobiles.
