OVERVIEW We seek a highly skilled Senior Managing Editor with exceptional skills who can provide comprehensive support to all aspects of peer-reviewed scientific journal development. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in coordinating article and issue development and overseeing digital publication. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in the best practices of scientific journal publication and have knowledge in alcohol use disorder research or other topics related to behavioral health.
DUTIES Oversee all aspects of the editorial process and coordinate all article and journal issue-related efforts such as manuscript tracking, copyediting, layout, and online publishing. Serve as the principal point of contact with clients and facilitate communication with authors, scientific reviewers, and subject matter experts. Provide substantive content editing for highly complex behavioral health-related scientific peer-reviewed journal publications. Coordinate, document, and monitor the receipt, revision, and peer review of manuscripts that include contributions from multiple writers. Coordinate article submission and peer review with advisory boards and provide feedback. Review materials for content, clarity, consistency, grammar, format, and organization. Ensure overall editorial quality, including compliance with Federal regulations and guidelines and adherence to client standards. Maintain, update, and track internal operating procedures and journal development assets. Assist with the development and implementation of new policies and procedures as needed. Manage the editorial, production, graphics, web, and analytics team and delegate assignments as required. Make recommendations for enhancements and improvement of all deliverables as part of ongoing quality improvement. Work with the writing and editing team to create and maintain processes and procedures that ensure consistency across multiple deliverables, including compliance with style guides and quality control checklists. Make recommendations for process improvement. Perform quality control reviews. Develop project management plans, schedules, and performance metrics. Track and report on progress throughout the lifecycle of tasks. Coordinate project meetings with clients and authors. Develop agenda and meeting minutes and report on performance metrics, project status, schedules, assignments, due dates, etc. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree or higher in English, journalism, science- or communications-related degrees; similar degrees considered (master's and/or Ph.D. degree preferred). Extensive expertise in scientific journal management and online publication. Project management application experience (PMP certification is a plus but not required) At least ten years' experience managing, writing, and editing science and evidence-based content, preferably for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, other federal agencies, or scientific peer-reviewed journals. Excellent written communication skills, including expert document organization skills, research skills, and English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Proficiency in APA and AMA editorial styles. Ability to engage and collaborate with a team of talented in-house staff, clients, external consultants, and scientists in developing peer-reviewed scientific publications. Proven writing skills as applied to scientific and health-related content. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Excellent oral communication skills High proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using M.S. Word styles in document development. Experience with Project Management, Drupal, and Managing Editor Software is a plus. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Strong history of translating highly technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable written content for professional and lay audiences. Proven ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature; grade quality of evidence and strength of recommendations; and synthesize independently, with minimal guidance from content experts. Experience in alcohol use disorders, mental health disorders, substance abuse, or other behavioral health experiences is a plus.
