Summary/Objective Participate in science-based research and programs to maintain the health & prosperity of watershed floodplain habitats and associated species.
Essential Job Duties Initiates, designs, conducts, and coordinates literature reviews and scientific research projects related to stream and river floodplain habitats, species, and communities relying on those habitats. Consults with managers, biometricians, human dimensions staff, GIS staff, and other collaborators to identify key management questions and develop those into research project proposals. Oversees all components of approved research projects including budgeting, hiring and supervision of hourly workers, data collection, data analysis, managing cooperative agreements, progress reports, grant reporting, and final reporting. Maintain the accuracy and availability of information in various databases. Focuses on long-term, ecosystem level projects on a variety of stream and river floodplain subjects to provide high-quality, science-based information regarding priority issues and on priority geographies and to support local, regional, and statewide management efforts. Through current research and data sets examines animal and vegetation response to flood and drought. Coordinates/collaborates with team members of internal and external stakeholders including watershed ecologist, landscape ecologist, and flow ecologist. Sets direction for the Department as a subject matter expert/spokesperson to inform and improve understanding of floodplain habitats, species, and systems and provides statewide guidance on species/habitat/ecosystem populations and functions. Creates various technical and non-technical presentations and publications for scientific journals, papers, posters, pamphlets, websites, and popular articles. Supervises, administers, and coordinates activities of personnel for research and monitoring activities. Recruits and selects hourly employees, ensures safety training, and creates training opportunities to enhance staff effectiveness. Guides and mentors graduate students associated with cooperative research projects. Assists other Branches and partners as needed on emerging or regional needs related to the natural flow regime, floodplain restoration, levee set-back evaluation and restoration, floodplain habitat restoration, and information needs on floodplain dependent plant and animal species. Uses various watershed models and GIS to predict and track floodplain management practices. Participates in project reviews and on project review teams for other research projects. Provides scientific technical support to researchers, students, managers, administrators, educators, and protection staff. Corresponds with stakeholders via email, telephone, and in-person discussion. Ancillary Job Duties Other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Master's Degree in Wildlife Science, Fisheries, Biological Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Hydrology, or related sciences. At least three (3) years of relevant professional experience. Must maintain a valid, current driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to operate boats, outboard motors, land maintenance equipment, power tools and large trucks pulling trailers. Ability to travel and work varying shifts, as required. Ability to use office equipment, such as copier, phone system, fax, scanner, and computer. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with fishery science and wildlife management. Familiarity with GPS and GIS equipment. Work Environment Regularly work in outdoor environments where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist. Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection. Physical Abilities Remain stationary up to 70% of the time. Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings. Regularly operate tools and other machinery and relocate machinery to other areas. Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information. Clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Regularly lift up to 30 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds. Concentrated attention is required at all times. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
