Job Summary: A Researcher I position is available in Dr. Steven Hall's lab in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences to assist with field and laboratory research related to agricultural water quality and climate change.
Research projects include studies of nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions from soil and water. Candidates should have experience in analytical chemistry and a specific familiarity with chemical analyses of soil, water, and gases. Candidates should have experience with operating, troubleshooting, programming, and calibrating scientific instrumentation such as dataloggers, optical gas analyzers, and spectrophotometers. Candidates should also have experience in reproducible research and data analysis using R software. Candidates will be expected to train and supervise undergraduate student workers in the lab and to assist other lab members with their research projects.
The incumbent will be based in Madison but will be expected to travel overnight on a regular basis (approximately monthly) to conduct field measurements in Iowa and Wisconsin. Candidates should have the capacity to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions, to contribute to a highly collaborative team environment, the ability to troubleshoot experiments, a passion for scientific discovery, and a rigorous approach to their work.
Responsibilities: Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty. 55% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures 5% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications 20% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area 10% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures 5% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding Institutional Statement on Diversity: Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. Education: Required
Master's Degree
MS in Environmental Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Ecology or closely related field
