Details of the offer

Position Description NYU Tulsa is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach "Bridging Divides: Navigating Polarization through Subnational Politics and Policymaking" for Spring 2025 (mid-January to mid-May). The course is sponsored by NYU's College of Arts and Science and the Wilf Family Department of Politics. The course is taught in English, and there are 15 in-person instructional weeks. Students will be a mix of upperclassmen. The schedule will be discussed with the final candidates. The instructor will design the course, prepare for all classes, teach, grade student work, and hold at least one office hour per week. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their teaching experience. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at the NYU Tulsa campus.
Course Details
Standoffs, crises, and dysfunction have become signature features of U.S. politics at the national level, fueled by increasingly acute partisan and ideological conflict. But in the American federal system, states, cities, and other subnational governments have long served as "laboratories of democracy" and sites of policy innovation — a phenomenon that persists even in our sharply divided era, with complex and sometimes surprising results. This course introduces students to political science scholarship on the historical, cultural, economic, and media dynamics that shape political polarization in the United States, along with its implications for policymaking at the federal, state, and local levels. It then examines how those who seek to effect change navigate polarization at the subnational level, often in seemingly inhospitable environments. Emphasis is placed on practical approaches and strategies that conservatives, progressives, and others are using to successfully work across political divides. To the greatest extent possible, class workshops and projects will focus on the experiences of local officials, policy experts, advocates, and NGOs in Tulsa and Oklahoma to identify best practices for fostering constructive dialogue and compromise to address tough policy problems in challenging environments.
