Organization
Oversees campus wide fire and life safety efforts. Serves as the 'Authority Having Jurisdiction' responsibility for all building and specialty permits on campus property. Provides technical, professional guidance, and leadership to the University community on a wide range of fire and life safety issues. Provides operational management of the fire safety program. Serves as the University representative and point of liaison with State and local authorities.
Duties: Coordinates a building inspection program and inspects University property for fire hazards, violations of fire prevention principles, and adequacy of fire protection equipment. Conducts inspections and acceptance testing of newly installed fire protection systems. Prepares reports and makes recommendations for corrective measures. Aids in the development and implementation of a comprehensive fire and life safety inspection program. Responsible for fire safety planning and educational training to faculty, staff, and students. Ensures fire safety compliance with Clery Federal requirements. Works with campus officials and external groups on construction projects, systems inspections, maintenance of buildings, and fire and life safety systems. Ensures facilities are safe and compliant with international codes (ICC) and applicable standards. Reviews and approves building plans on new construction and remodel projects. Attends construction meetings. Conducts multi-phased site inspections and system testing during the construction process. Issues certificates of occupancy allowing newly constructed or remodeled buildings to be occupied once approved. Maintains records, prepares reports, conducts code, and technical research studies on fire and life safety related matters. Manages multiple contracts for fire extinguishers, fire alarm design, installation and inspections, fire pump, sprinkler maintenance, and inspections. Responds to fire related emergency events and/or incidents. Responds to fire investigations to determine origin, cause, and completes investigative reports. Works with law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office on arson cases. Oversees the KNOX secure building access program on campus. Serves as the EOC Communications Coordinator which includes emergency meeting coordination with the Norman EOC & Campus Closure Committee via GroupMe App, OnPage App, & ZOOM. Ensures operability of EOC audio/visual systems and oversees EOC access security. Serves as the RAVE emergency messaging point of contact for the University Serves as an approver, crowd manager and emergency medical responder for special events. Leads the University Fire Marshal's Office certified Bike Team Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Location
Required Education:  Bachelors Degree in Fire Science, Fire Prevention/Protection or related field,  AND 48 months experience in fire prevention that includes experience coordinating fire safety programs, code enforcement, plan review, and investigations. Skills: Strong knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes, International Fire Codes, International Building Codes, International Codes (ICC), and all State adopted codes Fire science theory, principles, and practices and their application to fire suppression, fire prevention, and fire investigation Ability to discern colors, read, and operate radio equipment Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community Ability to read and interpret complex technical materials, including construction documents. building plans, and schematics Ability to understand fire behavior Ability to work in confined spaces Certifications : Valid Oklahoma Driver License in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days from hire date CLEET certification as a Peace Officer is required  Advertised Physical Requirements: Ability to climb ladders, lift, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand or walk for prolonged periods.  Ability to reach with hands and arms and lift objects Ability to visually identify, observe and assess Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and extreme temperatures Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and loud noises Work in confined spaces Department Preferences : 60 Months of Experience in fire prevention that includes experience coordinating fire safety programs, code enforcement, plan review, and investigations  Emergency Medical Responder Certification 24 Months Experience Supervising Fire Prevention Personnel Experience working with Higher Education Infrastructure International Police Mountain Biking Association Cyclist Certification (For OUFM Bike Team) Fire Inspector Level I & II Plan Review Investigation-Fire Origin & Cause NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, & 800 Supervision: Directly supervises the Assistant Fire Marshal, two Fire Inspectors, and Program Coordinator Special Instructions: If you are selected as a final candidate for this position, you will be subject to The University of Oklahoma Norman Campus Tuberculosis Testing policy.
