Job DescriptionA Natural Resources Specialist III (Wildlife Biologist) fulltime (40hours/week) classified staff position is available with the Virginia Tech Conservation Management Institute to support a variety of ongoing research and management projects in the southwest United States and Virginia. The position will be located in Blacksburg VA for 6 months and Albuquerque NM for 6 monthsRequired QualificationsEnvironmental Science or related field.• Demonstrated experience in the management and performance of field sampling and natural resource survey techniques.• Experience navigating over rough terrain using topographic maps, GPS and compass. Must be willing and able to work in adverse weather and field conditions.• Demonstrated expertise in analysis of ultrasonic acoustics specifically related to bats and squirrels, Kaleidoscope pro, BCID, Analook, Sonobat software packages.• Experience with Global Positioning Systems and ESRI GIS software a plus.• Ability to perform basic statistical analysis of field data and report findings of research through written and oral communication.• Valid Driver's License• Must be willing to receive rabies vaccinations.Preferred Qualifications• Previous natural resource field experience including experience handling bats, and other wildlife, with emphasis on federally threatened or endangered species.• Skills with operation of acoustic detectors and collection and maintenance of acoustic data,• Experience supervising, managing, and training field crews in remote locations.• Demonstrated experience working in rugged desert environments, ability to walk several miles in inclement weather over uneven terrain while carrying up to 30 pounds of equipment, be able to work in standing water and deep mud using hip waders.• Be able to follow complex protocols while wet, cold, tired, and being bitten by mosquitos at night.Successful applicants will be adaptable, detail-oriented, enthusiastic, comfortable working on public and private property and interacting with landowners to ensure continued working relationships, and comfortable working harmoniously with others at night.Pay Band4Appointment TypeRestrictedSalary InformationReview Date2/14/24Additional InformationThe successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto,Ut Prosim(That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
