Position SummaryThe clerical staff in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese consists of one Administrative Support Coordinator II, one Administrative Support Assistant II, and work study and student assistant positions. The department conducts a full range of normal departmental activities. The Administrative Support Assistant II position reports to both the Administrative Support Coordinator II and the Department Chair.The essential duties of the Administrative Support Assistant II are to provide general clerical and administrative support for the department's large graduate program and its advisor, and general support for the department office and instructional programs. The work of the position is supervised by the Department Chair and receives training and lead direction from the Administrative Support Coordinator II.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.Department SummaryThe Department of Spanish and Portuguese has nine tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 16 lecturers, 12 teaching associates, six graduate assistants, one Administrative Support Coordinator II and one Administrative Support Assistant II, as well as work study, student assistant and tutor positions. The number of part-time faculty and teaching associates varies from semester to semester. This position is under the supervision of the Department Chair.Degrees and Certificates offered by the Department include:SpanishMaster of Arts in SpanishMajor in Spanish with the B.A. Degree in Liberal Arts and SciencesMajor in Spanish in preparation for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Foreign LanguagesMinor in SpanishCertificate in Spanish/English Translation and Interpretation Studies Certificate in Spanish for the ProfessionsPortugueseMinor in Portuguese and Brazilian Language and CulturesFor more information regarding the department of Spanish and Portuguese, click here .Education and ExperienceEntry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program or its equivalent and some experience in an office environment.Key QualificationsExperience working in a university setting is preferred.Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.Demonstrated competence in effectively presenting standard information in writing.Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas and instructions.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,505 per month.Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.San Diego State University offers a rich benefits package that constitutes a major portion of total compensation.
