The Wisconsin DNR has two LTE (Limited Term Employee) positions available in Black River Falls, Wisconsin:
Wildlife Biologist Wildlife Technician Advanced The intention is to hire one candidate to perform both positions. This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected total work schedule of 40 hours per week. See below for more information on the available positions.


Position Summary Position 1, Wildlife Technician Advanced This position is focused on public lands management and wildlife management related activities in Jackson and Clark Counties.


40% Design and implement wetland, forest, barrens and grassland habitat management including project planning, consultation, coordination of staff and/or contractors, funding requests and implementation of project treatments. Treatments may include brush mowing, forest opening establishment and maintenance, timber stand improvement, firebreak establishment, herbicide application, habitat planting, water level management and wetland infrastructure maintenance.


25% Conduct wildlife surveys (waterfowl banding, carnivore tracking, otter, grouse, woodcock, etc), respond to nuisance/injured wildlife reports, assist with wildlife outreach and education efforts, coordinate CWD sampling efforts, and collect wildlife diseases samples.


20% Operate and maintain equipment including chainsaws, brushsaws, tractors, brush mowers, herbicide sprayers and UTVs/ATVs to perform habitat and property management activities.


10% Perform general management and maintenance of wildlife management properties including establishing boundary lines and posting, maintaining public access sites, creating and maintaining property identification signage and addressing other property management needs.


5% Conduct administrative tasks such as wildlife survey reports, accomplishment reports, vehicle logs, expense reports, training and other needs as assigned.

Position 2, Wildlife Biologist This position will serve as an assistant elk biologist for the central Wisconsin elk herd.


50% Assist in conducting elk monitoring and research including conducting field activities to capture and mark elk, recording data on elk captures, investigating mortalities to determine cause of death, conducting and analyzing remote camera surveys and telemetry checks. This position will also coordinate volunteer and partner assistance for all elk related work.


30% Assist with habitat management projects within the central elk management zone, including mowing, brush cutting, invasive species control, site preparation, and seeding.


10% Assist in managing elk nuisance and damage situations through technical assistance and education, hazing, trapping/relocating and providing the public with information on addressing nuisance situations.


10% Prepare reports and educational materials, maintain databases, purchase supplies, assist with outreach and education events, and other tasks as assigned.


Salary Information Wildlife Biologist: This position pays between $18.50-$19.50 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 15-04.

Wildlife Technician Advanced: This position pays between $17.00-$18.00 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 06-14.

Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.
LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.
In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:
Have a valid driver's license Be at least 18 years of age Have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year
Minimally qualified applicants will have the following:
Knowledge of large animal handling, ungulate wildlife ecology and habitat management Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgement Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and public Ability and willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions Knowledge of wilderness navigation Ability and willingness to work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends throughout the year
