The utility service technician is an important part of WHUD's Field Operations Department – this role assists in the day-to-day maintenance and repair work for our water and wastewater infrastructure. This position helps keep the water flowing across the district, which requires a strong mechanical aptitude, explicit attention to detail and the ability to work quickly and efficiently. Specific responsibilities of the utility service technician include:
Operating water and wastewater valves, fire hydrants and flush hydrants; Finding and excavating infrastructure for repair/replacement; Heavy lifting, ability to operate various tools and machinery; Collecting and analyzing water samples to monitor chlorine; Installing, maintaining and replacing water meters, water and sewer taps, boxes, lids, service lines, etc.; Site restoration and pavement repair work; and Other responsibilities as needed. The utility service technician reports to the distribution supervisor, but will have daily oversight by a crew leader. This role requires excellent problem solving, communication and collaboration skills. A successful candidate must also be willing to work hard, and fast, and often in non-ideal weather conditions to keep service interruptions as short as possible. This person must be independent, resourceful, curious and servant-minded; he or she should also have a desire to grow beyond this position.
A high school diploma is required, as well as a class A CDL (the latter can be obtained after hire). Because this is an entry-level position, previous utility experience is not required but it will be helpful. Before hire, the individual must pass an extensive background check and drug screening.
The starting pay for this position is $15/hour. Wages may be negotiated based on prior experience, applicable certifications and licenses, and other credentials.
