Research Project : Swine are food animals of great economic importance and are increasingly relevant as a biomedical model and potential source of transplantation to ameliorate human disease. To support USDA-ARS research in animal welfare, we require better tools to manage respiratory diseases in swine and we require better tools to understand swine immunology as well as heritable means by which swine resist infection.
Learning Objectives : This fellowship will specifically include training on immunological and genomic methods that inform acquired and innate resistance of swine to viral and other infections. The fellow will learn assays to help define receptors and signaling molecules regulating inflammation and other responses to infection. The long-term goal of this fellowship is to provide training in high impact research methodologies that can be proliferated to others in the same field.
