The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the UNM branches in Gallup and Taos seek a highly motivated individual to work as a member of the Faculty Research Development Office (FRDO) to build strong, competitive research programs across the UNM communities. The Faculty Research Support Officer (FRSO) will assist in grant and research development activities and development of proposals for external funding to support community development, research, and creative activities. The FRSO will have the opportunity to develop or expand expertise in rural, Hispanic-, and Native American - serving grants. The FRSO will assist faculty and staff in developing the non-technical portions of proposals, including program development, evaluation and data management plans, project management plans, statements of significance or broader impacts, and compelling project summaries. The FRSO will also advise faculty and staff in collaborative planning, grant seeking, budgeting, agency policies, and navigating the University proposal submission process. The successful candidate will be driven to address inequity through education, have excellent writing, editing and problem-solving skills, be highly organized, and able to work effectively as part of a team, managing multiple activities with firm deadlines. This position will be based in Albuquerque, NM and will require occasional travel within the state of New Mexico.
Summary
Seeks grant opportunities relevant to branch needs. Leads, guides and facilitates the pre-award grant preparation and submission process. Advises and assists departments with process and extramural funding issues related to funding agency regulations and standards, and oversees adherence to University administrative, fiscal, and accounting policies and procedures related to grant proposals. Provides expert leadership in the areas of project planning and development, and strategic grants management.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with principal investigators and other unit-based project teams, as identified.
* Provides active leadership in the identification, solicitation, and cultivation of major funding agencies, to include State and Federal agencies, national laboratories, corporations, and foundations.
* Provides leadership with respect to research development communication and the integration of individual unit research development strategies and activities into the overall University mission.
* Initiates, guides and facilitates the research of funding opportunities; maintains data on funding sources and a knowledge base of agency policies, procedures, and documentation.
* Coordinates, schedules, and facilitates research development activities and events for the organization, as appropriate to the objectives of the position.
* Advises on, develops and prepares complex technical documents, to include grant applications, planning grants, technical reports, project and status reports, and budget forecasts; writes and edits proposals and communication materials.
* Develops budgets and business plans for proposals and project efforts; reviews potential research projects and initiatives and develops appropriate funding strategies.
* Uses specialized databases and systems to record and track grant proposals, awards, and related statistical information; creates and distributes standard and special reports, studies, summaries, and analyses, as required.
* Maintains knowledge of grant funding policies, regulations, and procedures; disseminates and/or presents changes to departments and advises on the implementation of changes, and on the impact of changes on funded operations.
* Leads, coordinates, and/or provides support and training to lower level technical and/or support staff on a project basis, as appropriate to the position.
* In coordination with the Office of Sponsored Programs, develops, prepares, analyzes and reviews grant budgets for compliance with policies, funding agency requirements, and appropriate accounting protocol and procedures.
* In coordination with the Office of Sponsored Programs, provides advice and guidance to researchers and/or administrators on the application of grant funding policies, regulations, and procedures; serves as liaison between the university and funding agencies on various issues pertaining to proposals, awards, and/or budgets.
* In coordination with the Office of Sponsored Programs, advises and assists researchers and/or administrators in grant budgeting, and/or cost sharing requirements, and in the use of associated data management and reporting systems and processes.
* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
* Advanced degree in Education, Communications, English, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences Department
* Experience with grant writing and proposal editing
* Prior experience serving Hispanic or Native American communities, HSIs and/or NASIs
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make effective presentations
* Strong project management skills and team facilitation skills
* Broad, interdisciplinary understanding of research, scholarship, and equity issues.
* Familiarity with federal regulations and agency guidelines for proposal submission and sponsored research, including NSF, US DOE, NIH, DOD, NEA and NEH
* Knowledge of federal, state, and/or community funding sources and mechanisms
* Ability to communicate collegially and knowledgeably with faculty in an array of disciplines that use diverse methodological approaches
* Strong interpersonal and professional leadership skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment
* Ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing multiple projects
* Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to convene and motivate a team
* Understanding of how to enhance research and scholarship productivity
* Demonstrated familiarity with research metrics, data collection, and analysis
