Job DescriptionThe Lab Manager is an important part of the student learning experience in the Engineering Education department. The Manager collaborates with instructional faculty and department staff to support the hands-on aspects of our first-year General Engineering program and upper-class interdisciplinary project-based learning courses. This role includes managing materials, supply purchasing and inventory, coordinating student engagement, and supporting timely completion of course objectives for the Foundations of Engineering courses (ENGE 1215, 1216, 1414), the Interdisciplinary Projects course (IDPro), the Interdisciplinary Capstone Design Course (IDC), and ENGE faculty-lead undergraduate research groups.In addition to managing current lab facilities, the Lab Manager plays a strategic role in advocating for and negotiating ongoing and future space allocations within the College. The manager works to secure and to optimize space resources to support the department's educational mission. This aspect of the position includes working to maintain Frith and ID@Surge, as well as interfacing with university development plans to maintain strategic departmental presence in decision-making discussions.The Lab Manager also oversees the day-to-day operation of the department's current prototype/fabrication/build spaces - the Frith First-Year Maker Space (Frith Lab) and the Interdisciplinary Projects Lab (ID@Surge). Reporting to the ENGE Department Head, the Lab Manager has the primary role in training, supervising, and scheduling of lab assistants, equipment, and space. The Manager will be responsible for maintaining a culture of safety, compliance, and awareness in the lab to minimize risks.The Lab Manager position will be a 9-month, Academic Year appointment, with an additional one-month summer support period with a schedule as agreed upon annually with the Department Head to support necessary summer usage of lab facilities.Required Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in an engineering or related discipline• Proficiency in machining, rigging, and shop safety• Demonstrated ability to train and instruct others on proper usage and handling ofequipment and tools• Prior hands-on experience with power tools, soldering, wiring, and 3D printing• Prior supervisory experiencePreferred Qualifications• Master's degree in STEM discipline• Knowledge of university laboratory safety policies, regulations, and practices• Previous experience managing a laboratory (preferably in educational setting)• Ability to maintain 3D printers and other lab equipment.• Training and experience in mechatronics, including CNC machines and laser engravers.• Experience overseeing undergraduate students• Familiarity with university procurement procedures, especially those used at Virginia Tech• Programming experience, particularly in Arduino, Python, or JavaScript• Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff in a team-based environmentPay Band{lPayScaleID}Appointment TypeRegularSalary InformationReview Date4/4/24Additional InformationThe successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto,Ut Prosim(That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
