By joining our Office of Project Development Division of Planning as a Transportation Engineering Technologist I in Franklin County, you'll have the opportunity to complete a variety of basic technical components while creating or referencing engineering documents, including plans, proposals, specifications, and addenda. Performs tasks requiring the application of technical principles in the design, development and/or review of engineering projects while training to perform more advanced technical functions. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions of the class must be approved by a KRS Chapter 322 Licensed Professional Engineer.)
Holders of the Transportation Engineering Technologist I position will complete tasks such as: Plan, schedule and coordinate minor engineering projects, collection of traffic count data, collection on all Kentucky Interstate routes. Utilizes Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATRs) in order to perform said counts on semi-permanent loop stations installed in the pavement. Programs and maintains ATR devices in order to achieve count results for future minor engineering projects. Utilize CAD software to assist in preparing minor highway design plans for count stations. Utilize Microsoft Office Software to maintain some minor databases. Utilize software in order to monitor ATR communication technical data and communicate with manager and field team. Inspect semi-permanent count stations and apply technical principles to diagnose issues/problems with field equipment. Repairs equipment as needed. Other duties as assigned. Holders Of This Job Will Obtain The Following Skills Learn to use specific hardware and software need to perform traffic counts. Learn to perform inspections in the field and complete inspection reports. Communicate effectively with teammates and other co-workers throughout the state. Effectively manage workloads and time while traveling statewide.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position: Have experience working with various computer applications, including some CAD experience and Microsoft Office applications. Be able to utilize hand tool, including those need to work on minor electrical devices. Be able to communicate effectively, and write detailed inspection reports on said duties. Be able to work in the field in roadside environments next to traveling traffic. Travel is required on a weekly basis as well as some work at a desk. Some standing/bending/lifting will be required. Being able to work beside and in the roadway on a near daily basis will be required.

Minimum Requirements EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, computer science, data science, geology, earth science, industrial technology, industrial drafting, design technology or construction technology. OR Graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: None Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: 1. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree OR an associate degree in an engineering field OR 2. High school OR 3. High school Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: 1. Must have three years of engineering-related experience with the first education option above; OR 2. Must have six years of engineering-related experience in which case related technical or vocational training will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years with the second education option above; OR 3. Must have four years of bridge inspection experience under the supervision of a Qualified Inspection Team Leader, plus successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course with the third education option above. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites and other types of work zones which requires the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
