Job Summary The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment. Function: Surveys Sets up real time kinematic global position systems or total station. Performs basic data comparison from real time kinematic global position systems or total station. Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities. Assists in the set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment. Assists survey lead in field construction. Sets up and operates global positioning systems and base stations. Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, monuments and section corners. Communicates with contractors, landowners, consultants and supervisors to report progress or review work assignment. Assists in performing 1st and 2nd order geodetic control surveys. Processes geodetic control data and performs technical computations. Sets up basic stereomodels within an analytical stereoplotter. Performs basic operation of an analytical stereoplotter or digital workstation. Records basic stereo-model setup and compilation parameters to ensure availability of clear, concise information for analysis and optimization of map compilation. Assists in preparing mapping and aero-triangulation projects. Performs file maintenance and back-up of regular and archived mapping files. Performs other duties as assigned. Function: Snow and Ice Performs Snow & Ice duties such as: Maintains roadways for snow and ice control. Prepares and inspects winter equipment. Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup. Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals. Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management. Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:
Six months of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.), mapping, geodetic or related activities and a combination of six months experience in road maintenance, construction, materials/soils, permits, etc. OR Note: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts). Please note: Candidates in their final year of a listed degree above are also eligible to apply, but all offers of employment will be contingent upon successfully completing the educational requirement. Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. Valid Class D License: with the ability to obtain a Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement. CDL must be obtained within 9 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist. Physical Requirements A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
