The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Geology Trainee/Geology Associate/Professional Environmental Geologist opening in Topeka. The KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation is seeking a candidate for this project management position in the Orphan Sites Program. This position manages investigations and remediation efforts at contaminated sites statewide. The position evaluates technical work plans, proposals, sampling programs, analytical data, and reports associated with investigations and remedial actions. Some travel is required to perform site visits for the purpose of conducting field investigations, contractor oversight, or environmental sampling activities. Successful candidates should have some experience/knowledge of environmental investigation/remediation and the ability to interact well with contractors, consultants, partner agencies, and the public. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Acts as a project manager on environmentally contaminated sites and other assigned projects where ongoing investigation and cleanup are occurring; evaluates investigative, monitoring, and general remedial progress to ensure projects are completed within time frames established by State law and budgets (where applicable); effectively interact with project stakeholders and the public to facilitate timely site investigations and cleanups and disseminate information to the community; communicate all aspects of project management through appropriate chain of command to provide information and/or briefings to management as requested; represent the agency/bureau/section/program at public meetings, technical meetings, and/or workshops to present data, documents, findings to the public, regulatory community, or industry. Primary duties require knowledge in geology, hydrogeology and groundwater pollution investigation.
Provide thorough and quality reviews of projects specific technical documents within program guidelines, within 30 to 60 business days of receipt. Review and evaluate assessment and remediation work plans, proposals and reports for completeness, accuracy, and technical adequacy. Includes analysis and interpretation of technical data to identify and develop solutions to environmental problems. Reviews completed within a specific code of policies, procedures, and program quality management plan to ensure that work satisfies relevant statutes, regulations, and program guidance. Reviews will be documented through written correspondence with entities conducting such investigations and/or remediation. Various types of communication including written (letter and email) and oral (telecommunication and face-to-face) are expected during document reviews. May compile and interpret information from geologic source documents and laboratory results, drill logs, and other field studies and prepare preliminary technical reports of findings under the guidance of a licensed professional geologist. Qualifications Education : Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field. Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State. Minimum Qualifications: Geology Trainee Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position. Geology Associate Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position. Valid Intern Geologist certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions. Professional Environmental Geologist Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position. Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in collecting field samples of soil, water, or air for various contaminants. Experience in reviewing environmental investigation reports. ArcGIS mapping. Ability to use personal protective equipment. Proofreading, editing, attention to detail. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. Post - Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
