Well established, State-Wide (CT) Union Employee Benefit Fund office seeking a Systems and Network Administrator.
The IUOE Local 478 Employee Benefit Funds are a combination of five organizations that provide employment benefits to International Union of Operating Engineers ("IUOE") Local 478 members and their families. Those benefits include health insurance, pension, annuity, supplemental unemployment, and apprenticeship training and skill improvement. The International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 478 has over 3,000 members, including 400 contributing employers, and is the largest supplier of trained and qualified heavy equipment operators and mechanics in the State of Connecticut.
This is a challenging position in a highly regulated environment with business leadership that is committed to a mature, well-supported IT Department. Our ideal candidate will be committed to learn and grow with the Benefit Funds and work with a dedicated group of long-term employees and Benefit Funds professionals.
Position Summary The Systems and Network Administrator reports directly to the IT Director, and has ownership of a wide variety of technical and non-technical workloads.
The Systems and Network Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining Servers, Workstations, Storage, Network and Telecommunications Infrastructure, Active Directory, On-Premise Software and Cloud/SaaS Systems. Troubleshooting and incident response, vendor management, research and continued education, user support, and maintaining written documentation are all additional skillsets that a successful Systems and Network Administrator will be proficient in.
We are a three person IT department, supporting the computing needs of approximately fifty employees. The Systems and Network Administrator will be exposed to, and have the opportunity to gain expert-level knowledge in, a wide variety of systems. Our end users that require our support are a diverse population, with varying levels of proficiency in the use of computers and technology, so strong interpersonal skills are very desirable.
This role requires full-time on-site presence in Hamden, CT during an initial onboarding and training period. After the initial period, employees may have the opportunity to adopt a hybrid remote work arrangement, providing flexibility with up to 2 days of remote work per week, subject to managerial approval and ongoing performance assessments.
Duties and Responsibilities Network and Server Infrastructure Management : Maintain and optimize the organization's on-premise and cloud-based network and server infrastructure. Configure and manage physical and virtual servers, routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, uninterruptable power supplies, and other related network infrastructure hardware. Ensure network availability, performance, and security. User Support : Provide technical support to end-users, including troubleshooting network issues and resolving connectivity problems. Assist with user account management, password resets, and access control. Backup and Disaster Recovery : Implement and manage backup and disaster recovery solutions to ensure data and system integrity. Test and update backup and recovery plans regularly. Cloud Services Management : Administer cloud services and resources, ensuring proper configuration and security. Manage user accounts, permissions, and cloud-based applications. Hardware and Software Maintenance : Maintain and upgrade network hardware and software, including servers, storage, network devices and workstations, or oversee 3rd party vendors performing these tasks. Documentation : Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for network configurations, inventories, procedures, and policies. Vendor Management : Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for network-related services and support. Troubleshooting and Incident Response : Investigate network-related issues and incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective measures. Research and Innovation : Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for network improvements and efficiency. Attend professional training as needed to gain relevant knowledge. Other Duties : Flexibility is key in our organization. The Systems and Network Administrator may be required to undertake other duties as necessary, adapting to emerging tasks, business needs, and supporting the broader objectives of our small IT department. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required - You already have practical experience in these areas. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and Client Operation Systems, including technologies such as File & Print Services, Group Policy, RADIUS/NPS, DNS, and DHCP Active Directory Administration Entra ID / Azure AD Administration Microsoft 365 / Office 365 Administration Network Switching and Routing, Firewalls, and Wireless Infrastructure Working knowledge of networking protocols and standards, such as the TCP/IP stack Desire to learn. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work with end users that have varying levels of computer skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to write intelligible documentation and instructions for both technical and non-technical audiences. At least 3 years of related IT work experience Ability to lift 50 pounds. Desired – If you don't have practical experience, you can learn it.
