Position: Surgical Intensive Care Nurse

Job Summary: The Surgical Intensive Care Nurse provides specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). This role requires a minimum of two years of critical care experience, proficiency in IV insertion and phlebotomy skills, as well as competency in administering conscious sedation. The Surgical Intensive Care Nurse collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with complex surgical needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for critically ill surgical patients in the SICU. Monitor and interpret patient vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, and laboratory values to detect changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions. Administer medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and other treatments as prescribed by physicians, ensuring accuracy and patient safety. Perform advanced nursing procedures, including IV insertion, phlebotomy, arterial line insertion, and hemodynamic monitoring. Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare team members to develop and implement individualized care plans. Provide education and support to patients and their families regarding surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge instructions. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in electronic medical records. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care delivery and outcomes. Respond promptly to emergency situations and provide life-saving interventions as necessary. Adhere to infection control protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff. Required Qualifications: Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or higher preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in critical care nursing, preferably in a surgical ICU setting. Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) or Surgical Intensive Care (SICU) preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Proficiency in IV insertion, phlebotomy skills, and administering conscious sedation. Excellent assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Strong teamwork and collaboration skills. Preferred Qualifications: Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Experience with electronic medical records systems. Participation in professional development activities and continuing education relevant to critical care nursing.
