Job SummaryUnder direction from the Director of BCSM Student Services, this position provides independent academic advising and related support services to current and prospective undergraduate students in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, as well as health professions career advising for students throughout the University. This position works collaboratively with other pre-health advisors to educate and support the pre-health community and assists with development and implementation of pre-health events and maintains productive working relationships with professionals both on and off campus to provide accurate information and advice to students.This position works directly with the Director of BCSM Student Services, as well as the advising team and Dean's Office to determine academic probation, disqualification, and readmission decisions. This position will also be responsible for assisting the Director with monitoring and tracking students expected academic degree progress and providing academic coaching to students who have been identified through university or college-based early alert mechanisms as needing advising and/or academic coaching. This position advises students who are attempting to change their major and recommends to the Director administrative holds until students have successfully entered an ICMA contract or have been admitted to a new major.Department SummaryThe Bailey College of Science and Mathematics (BCSM) Student Services provides academic advising services for all students within the college. There are approximately ~3000 students affiliated with seven departments spanning 11 different Bachelor of Science degrees and the School of Education which offers a full range of options from undergraduate blended and integrated post-baccalaureate teaching credentials through advanced credentials and master's degrees. The Bailey College operates under the leadership of the Dean of the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, and a management staff consisting of associate deans, department chairs, and program directors. BCSM Student Services also offers academic advising and resource support for all students and alumni from all six colleges across campus who are preparing for a career in the Health Professions.Key QualificationsDemonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including students, staff, faculty, parents, administrators, and visitors.Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.Demonstrated ability to advise students on academic requirements and provide course planning through graduation. Familiarity with university, college, major and general education requirements and their application to specific major programs. Ability to assist students with developing effective educational plans and to progress towards career and life goals in a timely manner.Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. Ability to recognize and identify the various levels of problems students encounter and the ability to assist students to work through those problems or to refer students to appropriate campus resources as necessary.Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.Education and ExperienceEquivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. Amaster's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
