Position Summary Directs the activities of the Office of Spartan Experiences in order to ensure the development of co-curricular educational programs and activities that complement and supplement the academic programs of the University.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES Oversees the functional areas of Fall/Spring Welcome, Student Government Advising, Registered Student Organization Management, Late Night Programming, and Student Leadership and Activities. Provides leadership in the development of co-curricular educational programs that complement and supplement the academic programs of the University. Effectively manages the financial, human, and physical resources available for Student Life activities. Provides leadership and support for the development of programs that promote understanding and appreciation for students from diverse backgrounds. Formulates and implements objectives, policies, and procedures for evaluating programs and organizational effectiveness. Works closely with student government groups and other student organizations on matters of interest to them and to the University. Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates the Spartan Experience staff. Represents the Assistant Vice President on various University committees where matters of student life are of concern. Interacts and works collaboratively with Deans, Department Chairs, and other members of the University community in order to enhance the overall climate for students. Interacts and works collaboratively with departments within the Division of Student Life & Engagement. Engages in research and program evaluation activities. Carries out other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Student Development and Leadership. Works with various units in order to develop policies and procedures for student groups and to implement major University activities such as campus-wide Homecoming, Campus Life Orientation, and Student Leadership activities. COMMUNICATIONS – INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Interacts with:
Assistant Vice President for Student Development and Leadership and SLE Department/Unit Directors - in order to set priorities, problem solve, share reports, data, and collect information. Provost Office, academic administrators (including Assistant Deans), and department chairs - in order to serve on committees, consult on or plan programs and activities. University staff - in order to plan, consult, problem solve, and share information. Support staff - in order to provide direction. Department of Police and Public Safety, MSU Alumni Association, Cowles House - in order to share information and plan programs. Student groups (including ASMSU) - in order to provide advice, share information regarding academic governance matters and issues. Public - in order to provide information. RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS
First level supervision over regular and student employees.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH-SAFETY OF OTHERS
No assigned responsibilities.
IMPACT ON PROGRAMS – SERVICES – OPERATIONS
Failure to effectively direct the department activities and poor communication with other key units regarding student activities could result in ineffective and conflicting programs and negative reactions to the Division.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard office environment. The job requires very little physical effort.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS May require valid vehicle operator's license when needed to perform duties of the position. Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position. This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet. All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelors degree work such as a master's in higher education administration; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in student affairs programs and services, an understanding of the formal and informal organizational structures, academic governance procedures, and informal organization structures specific to the university, computer technology, training and development programs, designing and developing research projects and in supervising staff and office operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications Eight to ten years of Student Affairs experience.
