Overview: Nikola is looking for an experienced and proven Staff Engineer, EE Hardware Design to manage the design of low voltage high speed digital, mixed signal and analog circuits, architecture, requirements, and functions.
Responsibilities: Drive innovation around core vehicle control system architectures, vehicle assembly, PCBA manufacturing, component selection, and electronics design Grow and mentor top talent in the art of multidisciplinary electronics design Lead through direct input and collaboration, the creation of, and have final sign off on the following areas: Technical Product Requirements System design and definition Regular design reviews (schematics, layout, mechanical, DFMEAs, PFMEAs) Test and Validation Plans at component-level Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams (Project, Electrical, Software/Firmware, Mechanical, Systems, Safety, and Thermal teams) on vehicle architectures and technology roadmap development Demonstrate a high degree of initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems
Interprete and write requirements
Prepare specifications for hardware and/or software components
Select an appropriate design approach
Maximize use of existing design
Support Vehicle Launches
Create and interpret Validation Test Plans (DV/PV)
Provide technical support with Contract Manufactures/Suppliers
Qualifications: MANAGEMENT SKILLS: When required, lead a small team of designers (1 or 5 Designers) Manage assigned tasks, schedule, and budget Keeping track of progress on all tasks assigned to the team, Ensuring that all tasks proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements Verify that all assigned work has been completed accurately and on time Carry out all assigned work efficiently, with a minimum of supervision Generating accurate, supportable estimates for current departmental technology and providing estimates for technologies that are new to the department Intimate understanding of client Work Instructions and the QMS process COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS: Well-developed verbal skills to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums Well-developed writing skills to prepare clear effective documents Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent)10 - 12 years related work experience in highly complex safety-related electronics 4+ years building, growing, and managing high-performing teams Hardware design experience in analog, digital, and mixed signals, and interfaces Deep technical understanding of electronic hardware, circuit and schematic design Deep technical understanding of balancing volume, weight, power density, thermal density, and cost Automotive experience (preferred) Experience working with electrical components and topologies such as: SOMs, SoCs, FPGAs, CPUs, MCUs, Radio Modules (BT, BLE, WiFi, GPS), SMPS, BJTs, MOSFETs, USB, I2C, SPI, DDRs, mSATA, M.2, PCIe, Ethernet, CAN, FPD, GSML and similar Computer literate with knowledge of Design Tools (Altium, OrCAD), Bills of Materials, (SAP), Configuration Management (3Dx),  Jira and Microsoft Office suite Good interpersonal and technical writing skills Familiar with ASIL, IPC, ISO16949, ISO26262 standards. Preferred Qualifications
SOFT SKILLS: Ability to work in a team environment Mentor junior or new members of the department Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others APTITUDE: Locating and researching source documentation for design activities Making timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others Identify problems or inefficiencies in the department's operation and suggest improvements Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
