The Wisconsin DNR has two LTE (Limited Term Employee) Wastewater Specialist Senior positions available in our Madison and Fitchburg, Wisconsin offices:
The intention is to hire one candidate to perform both positions. This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected total work schedule of 40 hours per week. See below for more information on the available positions.
These LTE positions offer an excellent opportunity to develop skills important to future careers in environmental protection fields, including those in regulatory programs at the DNR. The Fitchburg and Madison offices offer people the opportunity to live and recreate in the thriving city of Madison and surrounding communities. The area is rich in opportunities to canoe, boat, paddleboard, swim and fish on the Yahara River chain of lakes (Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa). This is your opportunity to enjoy iconic Madison scenes and activities including the UW-Madison campus and its quality Badger men's and women's athletics, the Memorial Union, and the Dane County Farmers Market on the Capitol Square to name a few. Both offices have excellent public transit options. Plus, the Fitchburg office offers free staff parking!
Position Summary Wastewater Specialist Senior Position 1, Madison This position is responsible for reviews of sanitary sewer extensions, wastewater treatment facility modifications, and wastewater holding tanks, including projects seeking Clean Water Funds, as well as data management and maintenance within the Wastewater Plan Review Database.

Position 2, Fitchburg This position is responsible for (1) providing technical assistance to DNR South Central Region staff in overseeing permittee compliance with water quality protection permits, known as the Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WPDES) permit program and (2) reviews of sanitary sewer extensions, wastewater treatment facility modifications, and wastewater holding tanks, including projects seeking Clean Water Funds, as well as data management and maintenance within the Wastewater Plan Review Database.
45% A. Regional WPDES Permit Compliance Assistance: Review of WPDES-related submittals (reports, plans, etc.).
A1. Review and approve (1) variance reports, (2) Compliance Maintenance Annual Reports (CMAR), (3) industrial and municipal Management Plans.
A2. Review land application annual reports and soil sampling analysis. Enter and maintain documentation in SWAMP.
A3. Conduct screening of DMR data in SWAMP to correct obvious data entry errors. Conduct follow-up investigation of permit exceedances to determine significance. Draft NON's as needed.
A4. Conduct administrative duties including filing and file maintenance, photocopying, mailings and other work as assigned.

Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.
LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.
In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications Minimum:
1. Basic understanding of wastewater treatment processes and associated regulations
2. Strong understanding and abilities in math; including algebra
3. Strong understanding and abilities in chemistry
4. Technical writing skills and ability to communicate with technical and public audience.
5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred:
1. Completion of coursework in environmental or wastewater engineering
2. Experience working in the environmental engineering field (including internships, work study, or lab work)
3. Experience in a regulatory setting
