Summary: Provides direct, individualized support and interventions for Career Center special population students to help them develop the knowledge and skills necessary for successful future employment in their chosen career program. Collaborates with instructors and other support staff (counselors, special populations consultant, special education consultant, academic consultant, etc.) to provide strategic interventions to students or entire classes for whom support is needed based on assessment, progress and/or teacher recommendation.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities: Work is performed under the general supervision of administration. An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: Provides instructional supports and suggestions to instructors to assist them to effectively teach students with learning disabilities and special needs. Consults regularly with classroom instructors on matters relating to student learning and progress. Assists instructors in identifying and implementing effective teaching techniques to overcome or compensate for special social, emotional and learning problems of special needs students. Works collaboratively with instructors and other agencies to design and implement curriculum adaptations, as well as establishing job title goals to be achieved for students requiring modified curriculum. Works with Career Center Instructors toward the development of adapted vocational needs and objectives, which will lead to increased job retention rates for special needs students. Works with students in a variety of settings (in class, small groups, individually, etc.) to provide individualized support or interventions as determined in collaboration with the student's instructor(s), counselor, Center for Student Success (CSS) consultant and/or academic consultant(s). Counsels individual special needs students enrolled in Career Center programs. Plans, develops and teaches pre-vocational and vocational curriculum to special needs students to prepare them for successful participation in technical classes at JACC and for potential career placements. Areas to be taught include, but are not limited to, personal and social skills, safety, tools and equipment usage, materials and processes, mathematics, reading, writing, employability skills, and familiarity with occupational opportunities. Assists special education teachers and consultants with career awareness and pre-vocational training and vocational assessment needs of special needs students before entering the Career Center. Attends Individualized Education Planning Committee (IEPC) meetings of students being considered for enrollment at JACC and other IEPC meetings as needed. Assists Career Center special needs students (past and present) who are eligible for supported employment with job placement and follow along services such as MRS. Interprets assessment reports to students, parents, teachers and other involved parties. Coordinates efforts to prevent at risk special needs students from dropping out of the Career Center. Prepares reports, including, but not limited to, the beginning of the year reports for each teacher indicating special education students, their disabilities, accommodations, etc. Coordinates implementation of Perkins II applied Technical and Vocational Education Grant. Ensures that outreach, assessment, counseling, career guidance, integration of academics and other supplementary services as necessary are provided to assure compliance with the grant. Keeps current with standards and practices. Serves on committees, working as a team, that relate to the classroom and others that extend beyond the classroom to the entire operation. Communicates with parents. Evaluates, researches, organizes, coordinates, communicates with stakeholders, and gives directions to support a student's pursuit of a desired career, consistent with a student's ability(ies) and disability(ies). Researches and recommends professional development activities for the purpose of delivering adaptive curriculum to staff. Prepares and presents professional for JACC staff development. Occasionally transports self in a personal motor vehicle to other work sites. Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position. Other related duties as assigned by the Principal or designee. Education And/Or Experience: Bachelor's degree in education or bachelor's degree and successful experience working with persons with special needs required. Preference may be given to individuals with a degree in special education. Successful experience working with, or coursework related to aptitude, interest ability and psychological testing. Successful experience working with, or coursework related to individuals with learning impairments. Experience or education related to career and technical education helpful. Knowledge of interpreting and implementation of IEP process, IDEA, Section 504 plans and the ADA as they relate to school and the workplace.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate with full approval in the special education and/or certification as an employment-training specialist preferred. Preference may be given to candidates with a mathematics education background. Valid Michigan driver's license and good driving record required.
Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits: Anticipated employment date is August 19, 2024. Placement on the Instructor salary schedule depends upon qualifications and experience. New employee starting salary range is $50,411-$72,515. Paid family health, dental and vision benefits; long term disability insurance; life insurance; paid sick and personal business days.
