JOB DESCRIPTION: The Senior Tool and fixture Maker will have demonstrated expertise at manufacturing jigs, fixtures, gauges, and special tools. This position frequently performs the most complicated and specialized work – including repairing and reworking tooling and making emergency repairs to components, fixtures, and equipment.
This position is frequently asked to troubleshoot complex problems on the factory floor. The position will interact directly with multiple levels of the organization, including design, test/R&D, and manufacturing engineering, to aid in solving complex manufacturing problems. The individual may need to alter designed fixtures to adapt to manufacturing needs in real-time without formal prints.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Activities of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Gets work assignment from Supervisor, Tool Designer or scheduling tools. Works off a set of blueprints that come from designer and, at times, repairs or manufactures rework tooling without the use of blueprints. Makes jig, fixture, gauge, or special tooling – often the most complicated or specialized work in the department: Performs close and exacting fits, alignments, calibrations, adjustments and finish work. Selects materials and proceeds from own conceptions at times in absence of design specifications. Determines proper cutting tools to use on each job. Determines the best piece of equipment on which to perform the job. Performs all of the machining functions needed to complete the job. Uses inspection equipment to check work. Assembles the tool.Performs fine tuning and verifies part fit up. Brings fixture to tool crib. Troubleshoots and repairs jobs in process on the production floor. Performs housekeeping duties, owns 5S responsibilities for the tool room. Assists other work areas or departments as needed. Assists in cross-training others including apprentice candidates. Qualifications / Prerequisites Required Skills: 2 year technical degree in machining, tool making or equivalent or 5+ years of experience in leu of degree English literacy Basic math and trigonometry skills / ability to do this job. Blueprint reading skills/ability to do this job. Proficiency at setting up and operating milling machines, lathes, grinders and EDM Ability to weld a plus Proficiency at using measuring equipment including micrometer, calipers, bore gauges, Rockwell hardness testing equipment. Ability to interact with all levels of engineering and production to solve complex problems Ability to think through problems and provide feedback on possible solutions and incorporate aspects from a team Proven manual dexterity.
