What You Will Do
The Nuclear Chemistry & Spectrometry Team (NC&S) in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group (C-NR) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and results-oriented early career staff member with a strong background in radiochemistry who can contribute to the team's various R&D and laboratory mission activities. If selected, you will join a diverse group of chemists, physicists and engineers dedicated to nuclear and radiometric measurements supporting important laboratory mission areas and related R&D, as well as supporting the U.S. and international nuclear data communities. Members of the C-NR NC&S team lead and collaborate on experimental measurement campaigns that take advantage of local facilities like the C-NR Nuclear Counting Facility and the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), as well as external facilities such as the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL), the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and the National Criticality Experiment Research Center (NCERC). The C-NR NC&S team is responsible for the operation, maintenance and continued development of the C-NR Nuclear Counting Facility, the largest nuclear assay facility in the DOE complex. The Nuclear Counting Facility collaborates on a range of fundamental and applied topics, including in-vitro Radiobioassay, medical isotope production, low-background counting, nuclear forensics, treaty verification and monitoring, and fundamental nuclear data measurements. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Scientist 2 ($99,200 - $164,100 annually)
While the posted salary for this position is broad, selected applicants who meet the minimum requirements of this job posting can expect a start salary between $111,945 and $139,602 annually
Responsibilities for this position will include experimental research and development and collaborative support in the areas of radiochemistry, separations chemistry, actinide chemistry, and/or sample preparation and characterization. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to efforts in several current research areas. All members of the NC&S team are expected to utilize their expertise to support both internal and external users and collaborators of the C-NR Nuclear Counting Facility as needed. Scientist 3 ($119,200 - $201,100 annually)
While the posted salary for this position is broad, selected applicants who meet the minimum requirements of this job posting can expect a start salary between $136,170 and $169,812 annually.
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a Scientist 3 will be required to possess advanced level experience in radiochemistry, separations chemistry, actinide chemistry, or sample preparation and/or characterization. The successful candidate hired at the Scienitst 3 level will provide leadership for strategic planning in several current research areas. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements for Scientist 2 position: Experience handling radioactive materials safely in open-front hoods. Demonstrated experience with separation techniques such as chromatography or solvent extraction. Demonstrated experience with sample analysis by one or more of the following methods: gamma-ray spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, or liquid scintillation counting. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including experience delivering technical presentations and writing manuscripts and/or technical reports. Productive research experience should be supported by publications and presentations. Two years of postdoctoral experience, preferably at an institution different than your degree granting institution. Experience with sample preparation techniques such as electrodeposition and vapor deposition. Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship. Experience providing technical coordination or guidance to early career scientists, technicians, technologists, postdocs, students or peers Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3 position: Advanced level experience in at least one of the following: Separation techniques, such as chromatography and solvent extraction. Sample preparation techniques such as electrodeposition and vapor deposition. Sample analysis by gamma-ray spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, or liquid scintillation counting. Demonstrated knowledge of the chemistry of actinides and transuranic elements. Experience mentoring and providing technical guidance to early career scientists, technicians, technologists, postdocs and students Education/Experience at lower level:
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences (radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or related field) from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A PhD is preferred. Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a Master's degree in the physical sciences (radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or related field) from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A PhD is preferred. Desired Qualifications: Experience collaborating on nuclear chemistry/nuclear physics experiments at a national laboratory or academic facility. Work Schedule and Location: This is a full time position working on-site in Los Alamos, NM and will require occasional travel to conduct some experimental activities at research facilities outside of LANL. Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
