DISTRICTWIDE JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is accountable for providing a full range of professional health care services for the District. KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of and ability to apply clinical therapeutic models of patient care with emphasis on interdisciplinary team approach; Knowledge of and ability to apply professional nursing theory, practice and ethics; Knowledge of and ability to apply quality standards, procedures and protocols; Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic difference; Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR; Knowledge of basic neurology; Knowledge of child development and human development; Knowledge of common childhood infectious diseases and chronic and acute health conditions; Knowledge of community resources that support children and families; Knowledge of current medications, their actions, interactions, uses and side effects; Knowledge of medical, therapeutic and psychiatric nursing interventions and methods; Knowledge of nursing related technology, such as insulin pumps, nebulizers, gastronomy tubes; Knowledge of pediatric nursing; Knowledge of special needs children, special education, and students with disabilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties. Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development and maintains status as a Qualified School Nurse as identified by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health; Attends staff meetings and professional development, as scheduled; Communicates with families, staff and community liaisons to interpret and facilitate the transfer of health data; Conducts and supervises health screenings, which include vision, hearing, scoliosis, and height and weight (BMI), and pediculosis screenings, manages appropriate referrals and follow-up, and monitors ongoing concerns; Continually appraises the school health program in terms of meeting student health needs; Demonstrates knowledge of the State of Connecticut laws pertaining to immunizations, medication administration, health records and other issues related to school nursing; Develops and maintains a system of interventions to appropriately address injury and illness; Initiates referrals for students who require further evaluation or treatment; Educates and assists parents in utilizing appropriate private, public, and community resources and serves as liaison with the health care community and local and state agencies to meet the health needs of students; Ensures cleanliness of equipment and environment; Establishes, maintains, reviews and updates student health records on an ongoing basis; Follows all State of Connecticut and Board of Education (BOE) medication administration regulations and properly manages all aspects of medication administration and documentation; Gathers and reviews health information and serves as a member of multidisciplinary teams, participating in PPT, 504, SRBI, and Crisis Team meetings, as appropriate; Identifies and reports factors detrimental to the health and safety of students and staff and serves as a resource for health promotion and disease prevention. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License; BS or BA degree in nursing or related field from an accredited college or university; Five years' Pediatric/adolescent experience Current/updated physical assessment skills (preferably pediatrics); CPR/AED certification. BSN or MS in nursing with prior school nurse experience; Background in community health and multicultural/diverse experience; NCSN certification preferred Fluency in Spanish and English preferred. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: A school nurse must participate in at least ten hours of board-approved professional development activities or programs every two years. CPR/AED certification may also be required for this position. COMPENSATION: PER HEALTH CARE EMPLOYEES CONTRACT
