Northwest Academy is seeking a School Counselor for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.

Position Details: The School Counselor is a member of the Student Services Team, which works closely with administrative staff and faculty to promote a healthy school culture aligned with the school's core values and in support of the school's mission.  The School Counselor supports individual students and their families in their emotional needs, including therapeutic interventions and referrals.  The School Counselor supports faculty in their efforts to meet students' developmental and emotional needs. 
FTE:           .6-.8 Position Title:     Counselor Department:     Student Services Team  Reports To:     Head of Middle and Head of High School  Responsibilities: Establish effective communications and relationships with students and families Help to maintain school policies, regulations, and expectations  Develop and maintain professional, collaborative, and collegial relationships with faculty and staff, as well as with community partners to the benefit of students and classes  Support the work of the Head of School and administrative/leadership team  Exhibit a growth mindset about teaching practices and work toward professional goals and development  Participate in required non-classroom activities, including Back to School Night(s), parent/student conferences, retreats, faculty and department meetings, field trips, and special activity and performance events Provide effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy environment and school experience  Timely and professional completion of required reports and forms  Represent the school at community or public events.  Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned respective to faculty member's courses or academic department  Qualifications:  Advanced counseling degree and related certification. (e.g., MSW, LMHC, LPC, Masters in Counseling, MEd in School Counseling) and 3 years successful experience working with adolescents ages 12-18 and their families is required, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job; Experience working in an educational setting preferred; Experience developing a school counseling program, including policies and practices; Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of a school counselor; Demonstrated passion for and success working with young adolescent and adolescent students; Physical Demands: Physical requirements are consistent with light physical duties required of teachers generally. The school is spread out across five buildings, covering multiple blocks in downtown Portland, so teachers may have to move between buildings during five-minute passing periods or attend meetings around campus. The school does not provide parking for all staff members, so metered street or lot parking might be required.

Northwest Academy is an accredited co-ed college preparatory day school located in Portland's downtown cultural district. After three years of research and preparation, Northwest Academy offered its first elective programs in Visual, Performing, and Media Arts in 1996. The high school opened in 1997, and the middle school opened in 2002. The school now provides over 210 students in grades 6 through 12 with a rich combination of academic and arts curricula.
