Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Summary Kinross is dedicated to the development of professionals in the mining industry. Round Mountain, a 100% owned Kinross Mine, is proud to implement a Geology Technician program to develop well-rounded Geology staff. The program will include rotations in drill programs, sampling, and assay lab with exposure to both open pit and underground operations. The targeted length per rotation is six months but may be more or less in length, depending on timing of projects. The program is open to co-op applicants.
Drill Program Essential Functions 1. Performs drill rig sampling, drill monitoring plus sample preparation, cataloging, and storage tasks.
2. Prepare core for logging including loading, washing, and photographing core.
3. Log the core in accordance with Round Mountain SOPs.
4. Operate a diamond rock saw to cut drill core as directed.

 
Sample Essential Functions 1. Sampling includes use of shovel, other sampling equipment and mobile equipment. 
2. Must follow Round Mountain SOPs for the collection of high-quality samples and timely delivery of for assaying. Responsible for the quality and accuracy of all submitted samples prepared for analyses. Proper preparation is key to the accuracy of analyses, which impact mine planning and operations.
3. Maintain complete and accurate records of all samples by following SOPs and completing accurate computer database records.
4. Under the direction of a Staff Geologist, leads the technician crew in the completion of special projects.
5. Assists in the maintenance of sample supply stocks and equipment.

 
Assaying Essential Functions 1. Prepare all samples for analyses including; data entry of sample information; loading and unloading ovens; crushing and pulverizing samples; handling reject returns; and operating the forklift.
2. Maintain complete and accurate records of all samples in the logbook and the computer database 
3. Perform daily housekeeping tasks and the routine maintenance of preparation equipment.
4. Complete the task training and any required written exams for Assay Laboratory Technician progression and demonstrate proficiency on each task.

 
Program Essential Functions 1. Follow priorities as directed by Supervision.
2. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct. 
3. Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
4. Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
5. Works without risk or harm to self and others. 
6. Punctuality and regular attendance required.
7. Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
8. Performs other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

 
Qualifications and Skill Requirements 1. Must have a Geology or related degree or currently be enrolled in a Geology or related program.
2. Should have basic math skills.
3. Must be physically fit and capable of lifting up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
4. Working knowledge and skill with utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. 
5. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
6. Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team. 
7. Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis. 
8. Requires valid driver's license.
