What You Will Do This Position will be filled at either the Research Technologist level 1 or level 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. The majority of daily work is "hands-on" glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety, and environmental compliance requirements.
The Research Technologist 2/3 will work as a technical consultant to establish procedures, processes, requirements, or specifications to perform work on tasks/projects. Duties may include but are not limited to, calibration, and maintenance activities of various instruments and equipment located in gloveboxes, and non-destructive testing instruments. Research Technologist 2 ($90,000 - $147,100) Independently operate, maintain, and troubleshoot/repair a variety of instrumentation Review data collection record keeping and report generation Maintain/improve/streamline work execution in collaboration with others on the team Identify and recommend solutions to problems affecting project requirements Communicate results through internal reports and/or technical publications Contribute to method development work and work with unique or challenging sample requests Serve as the point of contact with internal customers Provides process specific trainings to other team members Research Technologist 3 ($99,200 - $164,100)
In addition to Research Technologist 2 responsibilities Research Technologist 3 will be periodically responsible for oversight of technologists and/or students. The candidate will need to be able to provide a first-pass analysis of experimental data and perform tasks to maintain high quality analytical results. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: operation, calibration, and maintenance of analytical equipment; physical characteristics of powders; performing work in fume hoods and/or regular/inert atmosphere glovebox. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as an individual or part of a team in a multi-discipline and formal environment; specifically working with First Line Managers, Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Technicians. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external customers. Motivated to be a self-guided learner of new techniques under the supervision of more experienced personnel. Ability to develop and modify methods and procedures to analyze new materials. Willingness to work with radioactive materials and other hazardous materials in a rigorous safety environment. Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Expert-level and demonstrated depth and breadth of knowledge in practice acquired by experience, certification and/or formal education. Demonstrated expert knowledge and refined skills in area of technical specialty, experience in specialized experimental processes, mathematical formulas as appropriate, computations, data reduction methods, and data gathering methods. Demonstrates breadth in related subject areas. Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory policies, procedures, standards, and guides. Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular area of research. Demonstrated technical leadership in area of expertise. Demonstrated experience covering either a large project or several smaller projects contributing to an overall program. Education/Experience Research Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at Research Technologist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Desired Qualifications: Experience and working knowledge in SNM material handling/movement. Experience working with radioactive materials. Demonstrated knowledge and application of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration criteria and standards. Experience performing work in manufacturing environment. Experience with method validation and analysis of measurement uncertainty. Experience with any of the following: Actinide Chemistry; Materials Characterization; performing work in regular/inert atmosphere gloveboxes; Familiarity with thermogravimetric analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Mass Spectrometry, Particle Size Distribution Analysis - Laser Diffraction, Surface Area - Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, X-ray Fluorescence, and/or Tapped density analysis. Experience with analytical methods and data analysis. Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the area of research. Active DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certified. Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations. 426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
