Shift: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Occasional weekends when necessary.
Job Summary: Over the past 30 years the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research [CAER] has built up an outstanding research program directed to high-value carbon materials, including:1. materials derived from coal and petroleum resources such as pitches, binders, cokes, activated carbons, fibers and graphite2. polymer-derived fibers and composites & carbon/carbon composites3. unique high-temperature characterization of these materialsCAER is staffing up its Carbon Materials program and seeks a Senior Scientist with expertise in energy storage with emphasis on experimental graphite electrodes in Li ion battery technologies. The successful candidate(s) lead experimental and theoretical efforts, with a small team, with focus on one or more of the following:a) Fabrication and testing of experimental graphite electrodes in ½ cell and full cell tests using coin and pouch cells, with emphasis on reproducibilityb) Testing to include formation and extended cycling under a range of conditions (C rates, temperature, etc.) with comparison to baseline standardsc) Scientific interpretation of results in the form of manuscripts for publication, presentations, and reportsd) Targeted expansion of energy storage work at CAER for future funded projects
In addition to the above, the successful candidate(s) will work closely within the respective team, and with the research group and collaborators, conducting a variety of materials characterization techniques (including SEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, EDS, PSD, BET, tap density, EIS, etc.) – correlating graphite structure and SEI formation to energy storage performance. Applicants for the position will preferably have advanced education and experience in materials, chemistry, chemical (or related) engineering, and a high priority for safety. Additionally, preferred applicants will have strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, and initiative; and the ability to work well with all levels of personnel throughout CAER's laboratories. A reliable and dedicated work ethic is expected and required. Biweekly briefings on progress with the team and sponsor(s) are also expended and required.Independent, disciplined researchers with a strong publication and presentation track record are preferred. Experience in independently conducting publication-quality research expediently is a critical component.
