Sarafan ChEM-H has partnered with Stanford Medicine to launch a bold new translational research initiative – Stanford's Innovative Medicines Accelerator (IMA). IMA aims to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries at Stanford University into new therapeutics that impact human health while improving our understanding of human biology. The Preclinical pharmacology team works closely with the Medicinal Chemistry, High Throughput Screening and Protein Engineering modules.They propel IMA projects with quantitative measurements of drug candidates that guide medicinal chemists and protein engineers toward drug prototypes.Preclinical pharmacology collects information about how drug candidates interact with their targets, affect cells in culture and behave in animals.Preclinical pharmacology informs how drug candidates will behave in humans. POSITION SUMMARY: The Stanford Innovative Medicines Accelerator (IMA) is seeking a Research Scientist, Molecular Pharmacology, to perform cell-based assays in support of the IMA's portfolio of drug discovery projects.You will perform and support complex lab experiments working both independently and in collaboration with other Stanford IMA scientists. You have experience and knowledge of a variety of experimental methods used to measure the quantitative interaction between drug candidates and targets. You are an experienced biochemist, cell biologist or immunologist with a solid publication record with a goal of making medicines for the benefit of humankind.You will have a minimum of three years of industry experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company performing cell-based assays for the purpose of discovering new therapeutic molecules.You have experience generating cell lines and using them to perform target-based screening assays to optimize drug potency.You are adept at methods of cell enrichment to obtain specific cell populations (e.g. CD3+ T-cells) for use in mixed cell assays (e.g. T cell killing target cell).You have a good understanding of the basic principles and techniques used in molecular biology and cellular immunology and have demonstrated experience in performing cell-based and biochemical assays. CORE DUTIES:
Support complex scientific and research programs related to Molecular Pharmacology and Immunology; analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes, and design and develop novel in vitro and cell-based assay systems. Collaborate with scientists, engineers, or senior administrative officers to oversee complex non-routine analyses, select optimum solutions, and perform corrective modifications to assay systems. Carry out all activities, including troubleshooting and resolving routine problems for scientists or engineers, independently. Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists to design and develop special purpose assay systems. Participate in the planning, design, and implementation of scientific or engineering initiatives, and work toward project objectives. Could serve as a resource in review of research proposals and research capabilities and make recommendations. Establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures. Develop training manuals and safety guidelines, and train new instrumentation users, researchers, and/or technical staff. Perform supervisory duties, including overseeing the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group/project, supervising the regular installation, maintenance, and operation of complex scientific or engineering projects, and training technicians, operators, and others working in particular scientific or engineering function area. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Bachelors' degree in engineering, science, or related field, or five years of equivalent work experience or combination of education and relevant experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree in a biotechnology-related field, and at least three years of work experience in the BioTech or Pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred. Outstanding candidates with a B.S. degree could be considered provided they have over ten years experience in the BioTech or Pharmaceutical industry and a solid publication record. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge and skills of biochemistry, molecular biology, enzymology and cellular immunology. Extensive experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and performing special technical services involving both development and performance. In-depth experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job. Ability to independently oversee and manage instrumentation including plate readers, chromatography systems and cell sorters. Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems. Experience overseeing the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objective are met. Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations. Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures. Experience overseeing a laboratory space or unit and supervising the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully. The expected pay range for this position is $108,000 to $129,000 per annum.
