Scheduled Hours 37.5 Position Summary A Research Technician II position is available in Dr. Doug Chalker's group to carry out research aimed at understanding how cells maintain structural organization. The lab studies a non-pathogenic, cilated protozoan called Tetrahymena and current research focuses on elucidating the role of signaling pathways that control cellular polarity. The research involves performing genetic manipulation of Tetrahymena, engineering Tetrahymena strains that can be used to generate data that test specific hypotheses. Experience in basic molecular biology techniques is highly preferred. Our lab also maintains the national Tetrahymena Stock Center, which stores laboratory strains long-term and sends cells lines or DNA samples to researchers upon request. The individual filling this position will assist when necessary to carry out cryopreservation, reconstitution of frozen samples, and cataloging under the supervision of the Stock Center supervision and director. The individual will also direct the work of undergraduate research assistants tasked at making sterile media and sterilizing glassware to support basic lab work. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities Perform genetic manipulation of Tetrahymena, engineering Tetrahymena strains that can be used to generate data that test specific hypotheses. Significant time involved carrying out basic molecular biology techniques that are used in specific experiments and assays. A major part of the time involves specimen processing, collection of data, and preparation of solutions, etc., to carry out these experiments. Some set-up and maintenance of equipment is also part of the assigned tasks. Maintain detailed records research with careful documentation in electronic and physical notebooks. Assist with general lab maintenance and cleaning as needed with other lab members. Perform other duties as assigned, particularly those required for maintenance of the Tetrahymena Stock Center and ASSET outreach programs. Participate in preparing data for publication or for dissemination on lab websites. Working Conditions This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research organisms.
Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a STEM field. Ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators. Ability to read research papers. Familiarity with sterile microbiological technique skills. After basic training, ability to efficiently execute sterile microbiological technique. Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction, and Reverse Transcription. Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports. Working knowledge of computer software including Excel. Ability or desire to learn how to update databases and webpages associated with the stock center. Eager to learn and welcome new challenges. Ability to follow instructions and protocols. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. Strong communication skills and willingness to improve written and oral communication. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a laboratory or research setting equaling 4 years may substitute for this requirement.
Grade R06-H Salary Range $16.59 - $25.92 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
