The Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has assembled a multidisciplinary team of scientists to respond to serious viral disease threats, including AIDS, chronic viral infection-associated diseases, newly emerging viral diseases (Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika, West Nile, and SARS-COVID), and infectious diseases of the elderly. Laboratories at the VGTI work closely with collaborators within academic, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical institutions all over the USA and across the world to conduct research to build new or improved vaccines and therapeutics to advance global heath. Scientific Programs at the VGTI are intended to span the continuum between basic and clinical science in which discoveries are rapidly advanced from the level of molecular and cellular immunology through non-human primate animal models and ultimately to the clinic. The primary goal of the Hansen/Okoye/Picker Laboratories is to contribute to the discovery of vaccine or cure for Emerging Pathogens such as HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis vaccine while conducting exemplary research in the field of immunology. The Hansen/Okoye/Picker Laboratories specifically focuses on the use of novel therapeutics and antiretroviral therapy as well as CMV-based vaccine vectors to elicit effector memory pathogen-specific T cell responses to intercept nascent infections before productive infections can be established. Under the supervision of Drs. Hansen, Okoye and Picker research staff help to characterize and define vaccine and pathogen elicited T cell responses in human and non-human primate vaccine studies. The staff member in this position will function as part of a team and will work very closely with Drs. Hansen, Okoye and Picker and Hansen and other subject matter (including but not limited to managers, supervisor and leads) experts to ensure all project goals are met. The staff member in this position will carry out daily activities of the laboratory, including: maintaining detailed documentation of the experimental work; work closely with lab members and with outside collaborators; and maintain close communication with Drs. Hansen/Okoye/Picker and other laboratory managers/supervisors/leads regarding progress.
To support this specific research program a background in basic biology, database management and software coding is preferred. As Research Engineer YOU will be responsible for assisting in the database administration and development of research specific database and software tools using various software platforms including but limited to Wolfram Language, MySQL, PHP, Python, MS VBA, and Windows Programming. Additionally, the Research System Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, testing and maintaining processes and procedures to improve workflows and ensure the availability, confidentiality, security and quality of data in data sets for which the Hansen/Okoye/Picker Laboratories are the steward. In this position the Research Engineer works in a group of hightly trained inviduals to develop, implement, and maintain innovative computational methods and resources/microservices to facilitate improvements in work efficiency and quality.
Furthermore, the Research Engineer in IDR is part of the Operational Group and thus will be responsible for helping to manage other Hansen/Okoye/Picker Laboratory staff, coordinating and/or performing training, scheduling laboratory staff and protocol procedures, and coordinating animal sampling with other research investigators.
Specific duties in this role include, but are not limited to: Develop and maintain laboratory database to assist lab functions. Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security. Produce an effective database system to meet user needs. Maintain data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act. Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata). Control access permissions and privileges. Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans. Data Base Administration to Support Research Functions: Design and creation of custom table spaces, tables and indexes. Support DBMS based system development and maintenance. Support end-user access to data stored within the LMS. Serve as a knowledge resource to the users, instructing them in the proper and effective use of the database. Provide feedback to system administrators and managers to ensure effective utilization and performance of applications. Ensure proper and adequate implementation and operation of security measures. Assist in maintenance of LMS system software, implementing fixes, updates and new releases. Support installation and maintenance of development software tools on client systems. Work with vendor representatives, system administrators, data base system administrators, data base analysts, developers and end-users to ensure proper and effective utilization of the DBMS. Clinical Informatics (CI). Rigorously test new CI services before they are deployed. Work with VGTI staff to identify and define opportunities to redistribute work between manual and automated means for purposes of improving efficiency, service level, outcome quality, and work satisfaction of professional staff Provide programming required to construct prototype and production implementations of platform, services and configuration software. Provide programming required to update software as needed. Be available to provide user support when bugs and issues are found and use that insight to fine-tune the software with added features or structural changes. Train new users how to operate software, much of which is individually tailored to their department's needs. Compose detailed documentation on each program for recordkeeping and to ensure institutional continuity. Create multimedia documents describing software use and function for user reference. Support administrative tasks associated with platform/(Service Oriented Architecture) SOAs, to include installing/upgrading 150+ user installations, troubleshooting user and infrastructure issues as required, documentation, and training. Education: Master's in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience. May require specific experience in particular area of research. Experience: Has a minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience in molecular/cellular biology, animal, and/or invivo research. Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Ability to communicate effectively, including use and meaning of scientific terminology in both written and oral formats Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting Working knowledge (18 months relevant work experience) of Microsoft Excel and Word Demonstrated independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research findings, including use of spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner, and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff Ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate research protocols with other staff Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties requiring procedural steps to be consistent and completed fully and timely Detailed record-keeping, cataloging of samples, data entry and statistical analysis, laboratory maintenance, autoclaving and use of sterile techniques Experience applying software development skills to solving issues, inefficiencies, and inaccuracies in a research setting. Experience conducting and coordinating projects in an interdepartmental research setting. Experience designing and programming computer applications to simplify and streamline workflows. Demonstrated success in communicating and translating complicated topics to an audience with a diverse range of technical abilities. Education: Degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal sciences, Immunology or Pathology. Experience with large primate studies, managing multiple research projects, and performing, analyzing and reporting results of immune assays. Experience: 5 years laboratory work experience performing immunoassays and cell separation techniques.
3 years experience in managing labs or research units, training and supervising of students and RA's.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment. Experience with geriatic or immune compromised and ABSL-3 with non-human primates. Work schedule is routinely Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM on campus at the ONPRC; evening and weekend work as required by scope of the position. Work is performed in laboratory settings with potential risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and equipment. Additionally, there is a risk of exposure to zoonotic agents by injury, by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids in some work areas. Willingness to work in Biosafety Level 2 and 3 facilities.
