Department Overview
OHSU Casey Eye Institute is recruiting for a full time Research Engineer 1. The Research Engineer at COOLLab will be instrumental in advancing the frontier of ophthalmic imaging technology. Their primary purpose will be to design, develop, and optimize the mechanical and optical components of innovative ophthalmic imaging systems. This includes transforming system requirements into precise designs, managing project timelines, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, effective imaging solutions. The role will require the application of advanced simulation tools for design validation and troubleshooting of prototypes, fostering an environment of continuous improvement. The Research Engineer will also play a crucial role in team collaboration, effectively communicating technical concepts, and integrating the latest industry developments into design strategies. Ultimately, their contributions will be pivotal in enhancing the medical device industry and potentially improving the quality of life for people worldwide. Function/Duties of Position
Develop and optimize the mechanical and optical components of ophthalmic imaging systems, including but not limited to OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), SLO (Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy), and fundus cameras.
Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to convert system requirements and specifications into detailed designs.
Utilize a combination of off-the-shelf and custom-designed components to achieve optimal performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability
Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field of ophthalmic imaging and incorporate this knowledge into designs.
Manage multiple project timelines and deliverables to ensure that objectives and deadlines are met.
Conduct hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of prototypes.
Document all processes, specifications, and changes in accordance with relevant standards and regulations.
Actively participate in design reviews and other team meetings, presenting results and progress updates Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
Basic understanding in the use of CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.), optical design software (Zemax, LightTools, etc.), and simulation tools. Preferred Qualifications
2-5+ years of experience in the design and development of optical and/or mechanical systems, preferably within the medical device industry. All are welcome
