The University of Iowa Department of Neurology is seeking a temporary, student Research Assistant (RA) to support the Narayanan laboratory, a fast-paced lab studying the mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction, dementia, and Parkinson's Disease.
The RA is responsible for working with animals (e.g., mice) and assisting with tasks including aseptic surgery, neurophysiology, optogenetics, and histology.
Duties and Responsibilities include: Behavioral neuroscience: running mice on operant behavioral tasks Drug injections: Injecting and administering drugs to mice Stereotaxic surgery: implanting small hardware under aseptic procedures. Detailed recordkeeping: documenting and tracking daily activities, maintaining the validity of research data, preparing high quality graphs and figures for presentations and publications. Required Qualifications A current undergraduate or graduate student in a higher education institution. Excellent interpersonal skills, including effectively communicating (written and verbally) with vendors, collaborators, and project researchers Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, reliability Desired Qualifications Previous experience as a research assistant in a Psychology or Neuroscience lab Basic knowledge and experience with MATLAB coding and/or biological/behavioral data analysis Prior experience with rodent handling and husbandry
