Job Summary: The Research Animal Resources and Compliance unit (RARC) is looking for an energetic individual to join our team of dedicated professionals who provide care for research animals on campus. This is a full-time, non-tenure track position reporting to the Chief Campus Veterinarian. Responsibilities include providing veterinary care and clinical oversight to research species in biomedical settings. The selected candidate will also serve on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and assist faculty and research staff with development of animal models and animal use protocol applications. The Veterinarian also assists in training programs for investigators, research staff, animal care staff, and other veterinarians; assists units in maintaining AAALAC accreditation, and provides anesthetic, surgical and postoperative care to research animals. Primary duties are caring for animals in the School of Medicine and Public Health.
Responsibilities: Provides professional veterinary care to animals in research colonies, designs and implements programs, and provides expert guidance to research staff and animal care/use committees to support the wellbeing of research animals. Trains research staff on animal care principals, and may instruct or lecture students to promote safe and effective animal care principals. 10% Designs and implements animal care programs of preventive medicine for designated individual animals and colonies 40% Conducts physical exams, diagnoses medical conditions, treats injuries and diseases, and provides surgical and post-operative care for animals in various environments 10% Documents medical procedures and activity, disseminates information, and makes medical recommendations based on results 10% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders and leadership regarding research protocols 25% Assists in the development and review of protocols, operating policies and procedures, and grant applications as needed 5% Develops and facilitates trainings, educational courses, and affiliated materials to staff and students on animal care methodologies and processes Institutional Statement on Diversity: Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. Education: Required
Terminal Degree
DVM or VMD is required. Must be able to be licensed in one state. Board eligibility or certification in laboratory animal specialty is highly desirable. Incumbent must be able to obtain clearance to work with select agents.

Qualifications: Formal training and/or experience working with animals in a research setting is preferred. The preferred candidate will have experience with the operations and health management of animal facilities. Experience in large animal research model anesthesia (e.g. cats, dogs, swine, ruminants) is highly desirable. Strong professional interpersonal and communication skills are required.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary: Minimum $120,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation and paid holidays, sick pay, competitive insurance and savings accounts, as well as many retirement benefits. Minimum pay for this position is expected to be $120,000 depending on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information: Successful applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without need of employer sponsorship, on or before the effective date of appointment. The Veterinarian must be able to comply with entry requirements for specialized animal facilities including, but not limited to health screening, periodic tuberculosis testing, vaccinations, and have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)(e.g. mask, respirator, etc.) as required by SOPs or policies. A period of evaluation will be required.
