The Infection Control Practitioner is a knowledgeable individual well-versed in CDC guidelines, definitions of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), JCAHO standards, and federal and state regulations. Responsible for identifying, investigating, reporting, preventing, and controlling HAIs among patients and personnel. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field is required SPICE certification is preferred American Heart Association BLS certification is required Essential Functions: Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the complete infection control process in healthcare settings. Understands risk-stratified statistics applicable to trending HAIs. Develops and implements a system to identify, investigate, report, and prevent the spread of HAIs among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel. Reviews cultures and sensitivities reported by microbiology laboratory to determine if infections are healthcare-associated. Collaborates with staff nurses on patient care units to monitor occurrence of HAIs. Investigates infections, especially those exceeding established thresholds or occurring in clusters by patient care units. Conducts inservice education on infection prevention and control housewide. Assists in developing, implementing, and improving infection control practices. Reviews and revises department policies and procedures related to infection control concurrently. Communicates infection control activities to administration, Performance Improvement Committee, medical staff, and MEC through Infection Control Committee minutes and/or Committee Chairperson.
