Full job description Supplemental Information PSSC 24-78-GJ Position is located with PINECREST SUPPORTS & SERVICES CENTER. Location: Recreation Therapy

SHIFT: 7 :30 AM – 4:00 PM PASS DAYS: Sat./Sun.

Special Entrance Rate THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST 4: $22.76 - $37.88

This position may be filled by Detail, Probation, Promotion, Demotion, or Lateral Transfer. Preference may be given to permanent classified employees of Pinecrest Supports and Services Center.

GENERAL OPTION:
A baccalaureate degree in rehabilitation, recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, horticultural therapy or psychology plus four years of professional level experience in recreation therapy.
SUBSTITUTIONS (GENERAL OPTION ONLY):
Experience in an organized recreational program as a worker, teacher, instructor, or counselor will substitute for the required college training on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

PSYCHIATRIC OPTION:
Either of the following will qualify:
1. A baccalaureate degree in recreation therapy plus four years of professional level experience in recreation therapy.
OR
2. A baccalaureate degree in any field AND attainment of certification in accordance with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification plus four years of professional level experience in recreation therapy.
SUBSTITUTIONS (PSYCHIATRIC OPTION ONLY):
Experience providing therapeutic recreational services will substitute for the baccalaureate degree and certification on the basis of 10 years as equivalent.

SUBSTITUTIONS (ALL OPTIONS):
A master's degree in recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, horticultural therapy, or psychology will substitute for one year of the required experience.

NOTE:
Psychiatric services are those services which provide for the diagnosis and treatment of mentally ill persons.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Job Concepts Function of Work:
To manage a therapeutic recreation program.


Level of Work:
Manager.


Supervision Received:
Broad from higher-level personnel.


Supervision Exercised:
Direct-line over a minimum of three professional-level therapeutic recreation specialists, of which one position must be a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 3-A or 3-B.


Location of Work:
Department of Health and Hospitals; LSU - Health Sciences Center, Acute Care Hospitals, Medical Schools; Department of Veterans Affairs; Department of Corrections.


Job Distinctions:
Differs from a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 3-A and Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 3-B by the responsibility for the management of a therapeutic recreation program.
Examples of Work Makes decisions on work problems presented by subordinate supervisors.


Evaluates the performance of subordinate supervisors.


Assures implementation of the goals and objectives for the therapeutic recreation program.


Determines goals and objectives for the therapeutic recreation program that need additional emphasis.


Oversees the development of technical data, estimates, statistics, suggestions, and other information useful to higher-level managers in determining which facility goals and objectives to emphasize.


Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures within the recreation program to accommodate resource allocation decisions made at higher echelons.


Justifies the purchase of new equipment.


Decides the methodologies to use in achieving work goals and objectives, and in determining other management strategies.


Accomplishes work through combined technical and administrative direction of subordinate supervisors.


Assumes responsibility for the productivity and quality of subordinate personnel in the therapeutic recreation program.


Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.


Interviews candidates for positions under his or her supervision.


Recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignment to positions under his or her supervision.


Effects minor disciplinary measures, such as warnings or admonishments, recommending other action in more serious cases.


Develops performance standards.


Identifies developmental and training needs of employees, providing or arranging for needed development and training.


Approves leave.


Performs all tasks of a therapeutic recreation professional.
