The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Bureau of Drinking and Groundwater is hiring two Public Water Supply Compliance Specialists ( Water Supply Specialist Entry and Senior classifications) to implement the public water supply program within their assigned defined geographical area.
PLEASE NOTE: We may use the results of this recruitment to fill other Water Supply Specialist positions in the next 6 months. If you are interested in an opportunity with the DNR, apply now! Each position can be filled at either the Entry-level or Senior-level, depending on qualifications:
Southeast Region ( Milwaukee Co, Waukesha Co, Sheboygan Co - Plymouth) South-Central Region (Dane Co - Fitchburg) The Southeast Region position is responsible for managing public water systems located in Wisconsin's Southeast Region. This position requires an initial training period where the next Compliance Specialist must be based within the region. During this time, new hires will familiarize themselves with the position as well as build relationships with regional staff, county partners, and other external customers. New hires may choose their workstation as Milwaukee DNR Headquarters, Waukesha Service Center, or Plymouth Service Center. This position may become eligible to telework up to the majority of the time upon successful completion of the initial training period with Division approval.
The South-Central Region position is responsible for managing public water systems located in Wisconsin's South-Central Region. This position requires an initial training period where the next Compliance Specialist must be based within the region. During this time, new hires will familiarize themselves with the position as well as build relationships with regional staff, county partners, and other external customers. New hires will be headquartered in the Fitchburg Service Center. Telework will be available up to 60%, after initial training period.

Position Summary The Public Water Supply Compliance Specialist is responsible for implementing the Department's public water supply program within a defined geographical area. This position functions as a Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) compliance and enforcement specialist. This position ensures regulatory and policy compliance is consistent with program-wide goals and objectives. This position establishes guidance, monitors, evaluates, and ensures implementation of public drinking water compliance policies by coordinating with other regional program staff, central office staff, other staff experts, and the supervisor. This position provides compliance review of highly complex reports and applications and monitors statewide implementation of the Drinking Water System. This position provides guidance to other department staff to investigate and enforce violations of reporting and sampling requirements. This position requires continual contacts with customers that are business representatives, labs, a variety of government agencies and entities, and the public regarding public water supply issues. This position is responsible for primary enforcement activities to ensure the safety of public health.

Salary Information Starting pay for the Entry level position is between $30.00 to $32.00 per hour ($62,400.00 to $66,560.00 annually).
Starting pay for the Senior level position is between $32.00 to $35.00 per hour ($66,560.00 to $72,800.00 annually).


This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.


This position is included in Pay Schedule/Range 15/03 for the Senior level and 15/04 for the Entry Level. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Telework approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR telework policies. Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs.
Qualifications Please make sure to address and describe EACH of the following qualifications applicable to your experience within your resume and/or letter of qualifications to be considered for this position: Required qualifications include experience in ALL the following criteria: Education and/or experience in a science-related field (i.e. geology/hydrogeology, chemistry, biology/microbiology, public health sanitation, conservation environmental science, natural resources, freshwater science, or similar field)
Work experience, or training in an academic environment, in analyzing sampling data, analyzing reports, interpreting results, regulatory compliance
Experience communicating compliance information to audiences of varying technical backgrounds and understanding

Preferred Qualifications Include: Experience related to adhering to drinking water systems compliance, including but not limited to monitoring requirements, violations, and primary enforcement measures
Experience in collaborating with wide range of stakeholders and partners, such as: the general public, businesses, contractors, consultants, laboratories, government laboratories, government agencies, etc.
Experience enforcing local, state, and/or federal regulations/compliance.
Experience advising on the correction of water contamination issues
Experience working and/or volunteering in a science-related organization (i.e. non-profit organization, nature center, academic institution, consulting firm, etc.) or with any local, state or federal government organization
