instruments for Medtronic's Robotic Assisted Surgery platform.  A Day in the Life This Principal Engineer is a primary technical contributor and leader in a fast-paced R&D environment, working with a team of engineers and other cross-functional disciplines to provide advanced technical expertise and solutions to complex product development problems: Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and utilizes technical engineering skills during research and/or product development of robotic surgical instruments.Critical in supplier identification, development and fostering a collaborative relationship between suppliers and the product development teamObtains and leverages first-hand experience with the clinical use environment, user needs, and user interaction points of surgeons, OR staff and central processing personnelCan work independently and in leading a team in planning and execution of project effortsResponsible for design, verification testing, writing of reports and presenting technical information to peers, upper management and usersYou Will: Working in-person at the Medtronic campus in Lafayette, CO.you will be responsible for:·Working as an individual contributor and (at times) as a leader in an R&D engineering team on the design and development of surgical instruments for the Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) platform·Assist in generating new product concepts to address unmet customer and business needs within the robotics portfolio defining new or using established technologies·Apply a keen focus on understanding, analyzing and measuring existing Medtronic RAS instrument capabilities and performance·Determining instrument attributes that affect performance·Determining sources of variation whether it originates in mechanical design, material selection, supplier capability, component fabrication or device assembly process related·Developing, leading and executing a plan to overcome sources of variation·Translating the above into lesson-learned and applying those to future robotic instrument development projects·Creating and defining product performance and test specifications·Designing parts, assemblies, test fixtures and assembly aides·Assembling and testing of prototypes for formative feedback, body-of-evidence and verification testing·Troubleshooting technical problems, determining, and executing on mitigation strategies·Establishing, executing and reporting on R&D deliverables throughout all of the product development phases·Participating in engineering, formative and validation labs·Creates documentation with design controls and risk analysis in accordance with established SOPs·Incorporates required regulatory standards (FDA, ISO) in developmental engineering projects including written protocols, test methods, assembly processes and the Design History File·Travel to suppliers, alternate Medtronic sites, labs and customers (up to 25%)Must Have: Minimum RequirementsBachelors degree requiredMinimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experienceSolid experience with supplier developmentGood experience with troubleshooting and failure analysisSignificant experience in the design and development of complex, dynamic electromechanical mechanisms and assemblies for productionSolid knowledge and experience with 3D CAD software (CREO preferred)Expertise in designing for manufacturability & assembly, creating engineering drawings for production, applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, selecting materials and performing tolerance stack analysesStrong communication skills to effectively work with a variety of stakeholdersBe a team player who works well with others to achieve project goals and can proactively, and independently to drive projects forwardMust Have: Minimum RequirementsBachelors degree requiredMinimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experienceNice to HaveQuality background or extensive work with quality assuranceProficiency with Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software and Windchill PLMExperience with Simulink and MatLabPrior experience with pulley mechanisms, drive cables, gears, motors, sensor and complex electromechanical assemblies.Experience with Mechatronics.Understanding of common manufacturing processes (i.e. Injection Molding, Metal Forming, Machining, Heat Treating etc)Working knowledge of rapid prototyping, material selection, and product design and process specificationsAbility to compile and organize technical data using Excel, Word, or Access.Trained/Certified in Lean and/or 6 SigmaWorking knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEAWorking
