Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill six Pre-College Mentor positions for Pre-College Programs at Oregon State University (OSU).


This recruitment aims to fill six positions, offering both full-time and part-time opportunities, within the Precollege Programs' iINVENT Summer Camp. As a Camp Mentor, you will take part in a comprehensive training beginning in the spring term (part-time), leading up to the camps that kick off in early summer (full-time). At the end of the summer there are opportunities to continue employment with Precollege Programs Student Outreach Education team.


Mentors play a pivotal role in executing a variety of program-related activities, including but not limited to check-ins, parent communication, leading invention and other STEM lessons, team building, and playing games. Our summer camps run throughout the entire summer, ending at the end of August. A detailed work schedule will be provided to ensure clarity on the sessions you will lead and the expected hours.


As an Invention Education Mentor, you will have the valuable experience of leading inventive programs across Oregon. This role offers not just valuable job experience and professional growth, but also the unique chance to explore the scenic beauty of the Beaver State.


Position Duties 100% Attend ALL mentor trainings and attend to all program related duties, such as preparing curriculum, materials, and facilitating youth engagement in programming. In addition:
Provide a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for all youth during the program Work with 2-3 other OSU students as a team to lead lessons Handle on-site logistical aspects of camp (check-in, snack time, check-out, etc.) Handle on-site parent communication related to needs of their child and/or behavior issues Communicate concerns and updates regularly with OSU Program staff Inventory supply kits and restock between camps Mentors are required to have a valid motor vehicle license and have it remained in good standing for the duration of the programs. Passing a motor vehicle check will be required. Minimum Qualifications Full Employment Eligibility Requirements can be found here:


Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term* Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications Mentors should be self-directed, motivated, and able to adapt to changing circumstances that arise in informal education settings. Must be flexible to do a variety of tasks that may arise. Preferred (Special) Qualifications Experience working with youth is strongly desired, e.g. summer camp setting, field instructor, lead instructor, site-coordinator, camp counselor, or in any informal educator capacity. Experience teaching youth is preferred, but not required. Experience managing youth in large and small groups. Experience engaging with youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Students with a demonstrated history of effectively delivering science, technology, engineering, and math related content with middle school and/or high school students and knowledge of out-of-school time learning will be given preference. Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills are a plus. Work study applicants are encouraged to apply. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Training Training starts spring term and Mentors are responsible for attending ALL training sessions. The training will support you in working with middle school youth in a camp environment, build your knowledge of invention and other hands-on STEM activities, as well as methods for fostering positive and supportive interactions between youth. Mentors will have opportunities to lead invention education activities with the Campus Field Trip Program and complete a canvas training course prior to starting in-person training. The start of training may be delayed until all camp positions are full.


Middle School Summer Camps Summer camps take place away from Oregon State University along the Oregon coast, in the Willamette Valley, and as far away as Eastern Oregon. Mentors are expected to work 40 hrs per week while camps are in session. Mentors will be provided a van to commute from OSU to close by camps (e.g. LBCC), and a van, lodging, and meals for camps that are further away (e.g. Eastern Oregon). When overnight travel is required, Mentors are expected to leave the Sunday before camps start, stay overnight in shared accommodations, and return to OSU Friday after camp. While overnight traveling, mentors also receive a $25.00 per day stipend to cover food in addition to their base pay.


Working Conditions/Work Schedule Up to three hours per week during training and up to 40 hours per week during the summer, depending on programing schedule and position. Exact start/end dates will vary based on each programs schedule.
