Organization Overview The Power Quality Investigation Group resides in the System Operation & Control Department which is part of the Electric Distribution Operation organization. Main function of the department along with the Electric Distribution Control Centers is to keep the lights on. 
The Power Quality Group deals with power quality issues such as transients, surges, wiring & grounding, harmonics, etc. that may impact the PG&E Distribution System as well as the operation of some of the customer more sensitive equipment. The group is unique since Power Quality Engineers not only have to understand the utility system, but also the customer own distribution system. Power Quality issues can be generated from Transmission or Distribution System, as well as customer own equipment or that of their neighbors. In today complex microelectronics environment, there is a growing need to ensure the quality of electricity supplied to meet the customer loads such as solar, electric vehicles, co-generation, renewables, etc.
The summer internship will be located in PG&E headquarter in San Francisco. During the internship, the summer intern will get an understand of the electric obligation to service customer. How the PG&E Transmission & Distribution System work and how they may impact customers. Also, what types of electrical problems that can impact customer equipment. Learn how to use various Power Quality monitors and go to various customer sites to conduct a Power Quality investigation. Learn how to use Smart Meter technologies for investigation purposes. Also gain experience in understanding and working with customer problems.
Position Summary One of the main project the summer internship position will be working is Electric Program Innovation Charge (EPIC) 3.32 – System Harmonics. The Electric Program Innovation Charge (EPIC) is a utility customer-funded program that enables California investor-owned utilities to develop smart grid technology demonstration and deployment projects, and evaluate how they support safety, reliability, and affordability for their customers. In this project, we will be testing the next generation of grid modernization technologies especially regarding how harmonics is effecting our customers. Not only the effects but how we can use new data science methods so we can become more predictive which in turn brings better reliability for our customers.
Review and analyze power quality data as part of power quality investigations Use DART, ILIS, Outage Report, CYME as part of power quality investigations. Assist the PQ Engineer lead with circuit and customer locations for the EPIC 3.32 project. Assist with the installation of ~ 200 4G Smartmeters at customer sites Download and compile PQ data files from these Smartmeters while working with vendor, Meter Engineering and IT Review and analyze Smartmeters data, fine-tuning settings and parameters based on project findings, and provide bi-weekly update. Assist PQ Engineer in gathering harmonics data and for benchmarking. Assist PQ Engineer in data validation and for harmonics modeling perspective. PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. ?
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $23.85 to $35.11
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Earning a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (students MUST be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship) Must have a valid driver's license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date. Desired: EIT or FE certification 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members Strong problem solving and analytical skills  Strong communication skills, both oral and written Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction Good people skills PG&E typically is unable to provide VISA sponsorship to students on an F-1, J-1 or other student visa for this position.
