The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. GENERAL SUMMARY The Maintenance Mechanic (Plumber) maintains and repairs plumbing for RDU Airport Authority. This position works on installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems, including installation and maintenance of lavatories, commodes, and water heaters across the airport field campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Locate underground utilities (water and sewer) Checks and repairs sewer lift stations and irrigation pump stations including motors, pumps, sluice gates, and other equipment as needed Installs new plumbing, including pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, lavatories, sinks, drinking fountains, hot water heaters, and a wide variety of other plumbing fixtures and equipment  Performs repair of old plumbing, including fixtures and pipelines, clean and open traps, drains and other lines Solders and repairs copper pipes Working an on-call shift determined by co-worker rotation for response to emergency situations Keep work orders updated and add comments as needed Conducts preventive maintenance on plumbing fixtures and systems Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required Performs related work in support of grounds keeping and maintenance functions (grass cutting, painting, fence repair, masonry, cleaning) Assists with snow removal efforts and other inclement weather-related needs Assist in annual inspections and testing Performs related work as required Hiring Range - Minimum $22.02 and Maximum to commensurate with experience QUALIFICATIONS  Education: Required: High School diploma or equivalent Preferred: Associate Degree or Apprentice Program Experience: Required: 2 years of experience in the plumbing trade Preferred: 4 years of experience in the plumbing trade Licenses or Certifications: Required: Valid NC Driver's License and ability to obtain a NC CDL B License within 6 months of start date. Preferred NC Registered Journeyman's Certificate COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES Knowledge of: The operation of heavy equipment such as dump trucks and front-end loaders Protocols for cleaning up hazardous waste spills Hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and industrial equipment Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook Working independently on a shift without direct supervision Skill in: Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature High level of attention to detail Critical thinking to solve problems and formulate solutions English grammar, spelling, punctuation Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and reviewing work assignments Ability to: Handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively Move from one job to another as needed Read schematics, blueprints, and other technical documents Meet schedules and deadlines of work Understand and carry out oral and written directions Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS The work environment and exposures described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
