The City of Louisville is looking for a motivated and professional City  Planner I or Planner II  to join a small team and work on a range of assignments at an important and exciting time in the community's history. Several infill development projects are underway that will create vibrant new places. The City is currently updating its comprehensive plan and has several policy and regulatory projects planned or underway addressing topics like housing affordability and community design. This position offers a unique opportunity to grow your planning career in a community that highly values planning.
 
Specifically, this position performs professional municipal planning work including research and analysis; reviewing developments for compliance with City ordinances and plans; writing staff reports and making presentations to city council and boards and commissions; creation of maps and graphics, and support or management of special projects like zoning code amendments and long range policies.

Planner I - $57,616 - $81,659
Planner II - $69,700 - $98,804

Reviews and provides recommendations regarding land use applications for proposed residential, mixed use, commercial and industrial development in the City. Reviews various building permit applications for compliance with application zoning and subdivision ordinances and regulations of the City, including planned unit development and special review use terms and conditions. Develops graphics and maps for plan documents and to aid in decision making processes. Experience with GIS mapping, SketchUp, and/or Adobe Suite is desirable. Responds in person, over the phone and in writing to inquiries regarding general land use questions. Researches issues, prepares reports, correspondence, and memoranda. Assists in coordinating land use actions with City departments, special districts, and applicable federal, regional, state, and local agencies. Prepares staff reports and makes presentations to City's boards and commission and City Council. Provides research and recommends updates to sections of the Municipal Code. Conducts research to provide demographic information for current and long range planning. Performs fieldwork pertaining to zoning code enforcement as well as site inspection in coordination with the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Planning, Transportation Planning, Engineering, Environmental Design, Architecture or a related field. Planner II position will have three or more years of municipal planning experience. Any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience will be considered at the discretion of the Director of Planning and Human Resources. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) desired  Knowledge of the principles and practices of community planning, transportation planning, and urban design. Familiarity with subdivision and zoning regulations, land use law and site development principles. Must possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Skilled in the use of a personal computer and various job-related software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Sketch-up, GIS, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign software applications desired. Ability to provide excellent customer service and communicate complex processes and concepts in an easy to understand and accessible manner. Ability to maintain a professional and courteous demeanor in sometimes stressful circumstances. Ability to gather, compile, analyze and present complex planning data. Ability to present recommendations, orally and in writing. Personal communication skills with a variety of people, including the general public, property owners, elected officials and professional associates. Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, and hear clearly; use hands, fingers, handle objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arm. The employee occasional may lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
 
  WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed indoors, although the employee is required to make field visits and site inspections for purposes of researching, analyzing, gathering, verifying or compiling data and information which can be in all types of weather. Noise level can range from very low to a moderate level or loud. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
