Full job description Duties The incumbent will:
Lead the development of superconducting circuits to measure signals from arrays of cryogenic sensors, especially circuits that make use of GHz frequency-domain multiplexing techniques. Measure, understand, and evaluate performance to optimize circuit properties such as noise, crosstalk, back-action, channel count, total bandwidth, and bandwidth utilization efficiency. Develop physics-based simulation tools to guide circuit and packaging design. Lead interactions with collaborators to deploy NIST-developed sensor arrays. Identify and develop new applications of cryogenic sensor instruments. Present research results and submit them for peer-reviewed publication to maximize impact of results. Mentor students and post-doctoral researchers towards measurement and system-deliverable goals. Interact with internal and external sponsors and customers. Independently develop methodology. Plan and coordinate responsibilities of team members to execute research. Identify challenges in research and implement solutions to overcome the challenges. Do work that impacts large collaborations comprised of both US and sometimes international partners. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either 1 or 2 above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
In addition to the basic requirements, you must also meet the following requirements:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-12 (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as: Expert experience in the detection of electromagnetic radiation using arrays of superconducting sensors including Transition-Edge Sensors (TESs) and Magnetic MicroCalorimeters (MMCs). Expert experience in multiplexed TES and MMC readout using microwave Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). Demonstrated ability to design, measure, and simulate SQUID. Experience with low noise cryogenic microwave measurement techniques. Experience with millikelvin cryogenics including adiabatic demagnetization and dilution refrigerators. Proficiency with a range of scientific software including Xic, FastHenry, Sonnet, Microwave Office, Solidworks, Python, Altium, WRSpice, and/or HFSS.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
