This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: ~ Experience participating as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team, providing a full range of mental health services to patients. ~ Demonstrates a high level or practice using evidence-based medicine principles involving patients who have complex illnesses. ~ Experience of working with adult population in outpatient setting. ~ Board eligible/certified Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desired. If selected for this position, per VHA Directive 1177, you must possess current BCLS certification as you will provide direct clinical care to patients in this position. . Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Functional Requirements Light lifting, under 15 pounds. Light carrying, under 15 pounds. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Walking two hours. Standing one hour. Repeated bending one hour. Both legs required. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.. Environmental Factors Working closely with others. Applicants and individuals appointed on or after November 30, 1999, who have been licensed, registered, or certified (as applicable to such position) in more than one State and who had such license, registration, or certification revoked for professional misconduct, professional incompetence, or substandard care by any of those States, or voluntarily relinquished a license, registration or certification in any of those States after being notified in writing by that State of potential termination for professional misconduct, professional incompetence, or substandard care, are not eligible for appointment, unless the revoked or surrendered license, registration, or certification is restored to a full and unrestricted status. Provide direct clinical supervision of mid-level providers, psychiatric advanced practice nurses or physician assistants and other staff as appropriate. Exercise judgment in the selection of or adaptation of standard and accepted clinical theories, techniques, and practices in treating patients or developing new techniques and programs for the treatment of specialized problems or clinical populations. Other services include, but are not limited to, treatment common patient diagnoses to include Anxiety Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depression and other mood disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other Serious Mental Illnesses, Dementia, mental disorder related to Traumatic Brain Injuries and any other psychiatric interventions deemed necessary by Mental Health Service Line management. Cooperate with and participate in medical duties or functions related to quality of care, peer review, improvement and with other performance improvement activities. Some of the Psychiatrists duty time may be spent at other outlying clinics or using telemedicine technology throughout Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System. Other duties as assigned.
