Job Description
General Summary
OB Safety Specialist collaborates with the obstetrical, hospital, and UMMS MMCIP leadership to promote a patient safety culture and adherence to national clinical standards, utilizing principles and practices of safety.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Provides Leadership in the professional setting by:
a. Serving as a role model for education and professional practice and to promote excellence and safety.
b. Evaluating the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices in collaboration with others to ensure that nursing and the organization's goals and mission are in alignment.
c. Maintaining required educational and/or clinical competencies.
d. Seeking opportunities to develop staff in various roles.
e. Integrating ethical principles in all aspects of practice.
f. Leading committees, work groups, and/or projects related to quality and patient safety.
2. Directly focuses on Quality and Safety by:
a. Maintaining active presence on the obstetrical units interacting, communicating, and supporting all providers and staff to promote a safe culture and practice.
b. Participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards for specific clinical discipline.
c. Serving as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in Obstetrics.
d. Coordinating Administrative Patient Safety Rounds.
e. Assists and supports the healthcare team with disclosure when an adverse event occurs.
f. Collecting data on compliance of process improvement initiatives.
g. Conducting audits and assessments to identify performance trends and safety risks.
h. Focusing on tracking identified clinical outcomes and communicates these to all members of the healthcare team
i. Supporting leadership in debriefings, RCAs and response to UMMS Safe events
j. Contributing to EFM strip reviews and grand rounds.
k. Promoting the successful completion of EFM certification for all nurses and providers.
l. Assessing documentation of chart reviews and providing real-time feedback to clinicians.
m. Maintaining a database of records reviewed, issues identified and plans for correction.
n. Participating in the development and improvement of clinical policies and procedures for the provision of a safe and therapeutic environment.
o. Working closely with Senior Clinical Nurses to maintain monthly statistics for Obstetrics and Neonatology to include but not limited to: MDPQC initiatives, AIM data, NTSV, Maternal M&Ms, Perinatal Core measures, Delivery statistics, LOS, ADC, transfers out of NICU (follow-up on discharge summaries from other centers), VON database, positive blood cultures, autopsies and meetings with parents post loss, etc.
3. Facilitates a culture of safety by:
a. Consulting with healthcare team professionals to address clinical practice, research, and educational opportunities.
b. Participating in UMSJMC and UMMS committees to identify quality and risk related issues and prepare plans for resolutions.
c. Participating in clinical drills, and simulations for high risk situations
d. Identifying and recruiting internal and external resources for educational activities to enhance quality and safety.
e. Fostering and promoting participation by all clinicians in education programs and clinical drills.
f. Promoting and hardwiring the adoption of briefing and debriefing skills across disciplines.
4. Maintains Evidence-Based Research, current knowledge and competency in nursing practice by:
a. Supporting the integration of research into practice.
b. Keeping abreast of national standards of clinical practice and science safety literature.
c. Disseminating pertinent safety and specialty related information.
d. Leading and Implementing Process Improvement Initiatives as defined by the OB Leadership team.
e. Appling evidence-based data for improving nursing practice, and patient outcomes.
f. Participating in the research process in a variety of ways.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
1. Minimum of 5 years experience in Obstetrics
2. Masters Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Leadership preferred
3. Maintain a current RN License in the State of Maryland
IV. Certifications & Licensures
1. Current BLS and NRP
2. Current Fetal Monitoring Certification or NCC Core Certification
3. Prefer Certification in Obstetric and Neonatal Quality
V. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Strong verbal and written communication.
2. Demonstrates the drive to go beyond the stated requirements to ensure an excellent level of customer service.
3. Ability to understand staffing and scheduling functions
4. Strong analytical and organization skills
5. Proficiency in standard computer applications, including MS Office suite applications (graphics, database, word-processing, and presentation software), project-related software, and the use of related peripheral equipment.
6. Ability to understand, analyze, synthesize and manage highly complex information.
7. Ability to think critically.
8. Strong customer service
