A day in the life The Payroll Tax Analyst is responsible for all payroll-related reporting requirements for the company and affiliated companies. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with changing regulations for federal, state, and local agencies and ensuring accurate federal, state, and local tax reporting for the company and affiliates. This position analyzes payroll data for accuracy and communicates key findings to management. The Payroll Tax Analyst performs testing of software and leads all new implementations of any process and reporting changes.
Your responsibilities will include Serves as primary point of contact for payroll-related reporting requirements to all government agencies and other third-party vendors. Compiles reports, investigates any discrepancies, and collaborates with external vendors, state, and local agencies to correct and ensure proper reporting. Serves as liaison between company data and external tax advisors for federal, state, and local tax reporting requirements. Works with external tax advisors to assist in accurate corporate, fiduciary, and income tax return review. Conducts research and ensures continued compliance with changing regulations where employees reside and performs research on all requirements for new locations. Reconciles and analyzes general ledger accounts and time and labor reporting. Troubleshoots and identifies discrepancies to balance and reconcile related accounts to ensure accurate payment. Builds and implements new data queries to aid in the reconciliation process while meeting the desired result. Prepares general ledger entries to ensure accurate recognition of federal income tax, state income tax, real estate tax, and premium tax. Leads projects requiring research, organization, communication, and problem resolution for the department. Initiates and documents user testing of all new elements in the test environment prior to changes being rolled out into the production environment. Leads the effort in reconciling quarterly payroll reports to ensure proper annual, federal, and state W-2 reporting. Ensures all regulatory requirements and timelines are met. Looks for areas of opportunity to create enhancements and efficiencies within existing systems and processes. Understands and leverages the payroll system and tools to maximize its full potential and minimize errors. Troubleshoots, researches, and identifies solutions to remedy issues. Prepares ad hoc reporting and payroll-related reporting requirements. Leads payroll-related audits and projects requiring research, organization, communication and problem resolution. Provides guidance to payroll staff as needed. Researches and resolves Internal Revenue Service inquiries for the company and affiliates. Maintains good standing with the Internal Revenue Service by providing timely responses. What you need to succeed Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or a related field. At least 4 years of payroll or related experience is required, of which at least one year must be in the form of payroll reporting. Advanced proficiency in Excel required. Experience with payroll and financial software preferred. Ability to apply knowledge and expertise in order to utilize and understand systems, policies, and procedures. Pays close attention to the details of all work, consistently maintains a high level of productivity and manages time effectively. Collaborates with other parties to achieve common goals. Ability to collect and synthesize information from a variety of sources. Possesses strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
