City of Bay City Full Time - Parks Maintenance Worker Department of Public Works - Parks Division - UWUA Local #542 JOB SUMMARY Un der general supervision, performs a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, grounds, city owned and managed real estate, and recreation facilities; operates and maintains a variety of equipment. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to mowing; trimming; aerating; fertilizing; maintaining park furnishings; and snow removal. The Parks Maintenance Worker performs a variety of routine grounds maintenance work and assists with a variety of special projects as assigned.
ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Assists with maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, landscapes, recreational areas, building, and other public facilities maintained by the City of Bay City. Operates grounds and parks maintenance power equipment. Such equipment includes but is not limited to wide area mowers, slope mowers, tractor mowers, and tractors with a variety of implements. Performs seasonal maintenance activities including ice and snow removal, salting, and other winter maintenance using specialized winter maintenance equipment. Operates a variety of motorized vehicles including, but not limited to pickup trucks, double-axle - heavy duty dump trucks, rubbish packers, and maintenance carts. Operates and maintains vehicles and a variety of power equipment and power tools used in landscape work. Fabricate, install, remove, and maintain park and facility signage, park, and street furnishings. Picks up trash; clears debris from walkways, fields, and park grounds; removes graffiti; repairs signs and vandalized property. Inspects, maintains, and repairs picnic tables, fences, benches, trash cans, drainage and irrigations systems and playground equipment, ensuring all equipment is in a safe operating condition; reports maintenance needs and safety hazards to appropriate staff. Maintain landscapes in City parks, street rights-of-way, and public areas by providing forestry services in the form but not limited to chain saw operation, pole saw operation, chippers operation, clam bucket operation, and stump grinding. Performs minor and preventative maintenance and repair work on equipment and facilities; assists with other maintenance work as assigned including painting. Maintains a clean, safe, and professional work environment. Provide customer service, courteously respond to inquiries, provide information within the area of assignment, and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Follow up within the scope of authority, make recommendations, and/or refer to a foreman or department manager as necessary. Perform specialized, skilled work in the areas such as, construction and small engine repair, irrigation and plumbing, and horticulture. Prepares reports and maintains records as directed. Performs related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within 90 days in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. Knowledge of :
Tools, materials, equipment, and procedures used in park maintenance work. Occupational hazards and safety practices as it relates to this type of work. Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding. Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds keeping. Ability to :
Perform job duties with proper safety work methods and procedures. Understand and develop maps/drawings/blueprints/GIS mapping. Maintain composure and exercise good judgement when answering demanding questions. Make operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment. Establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees, contractors, and the public. Understand and carry out oral and written directions in an independent manner. Utilize pesticides and other sprays in a safe and effective manner. Must possess time management skills with the ability to work with numerous interruptions and work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines. Must be willing and able to be on call during regular work week, including weekends, and to report for work after hours if needed. MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent is required. State of Michigan CDL B with airbrakes endorsement. Knowledge of operating forklifts, platforms, backhoes, and excavators. Knowledge of pesticide application and treatment. Knowledge of landscape maintenance, including the use of associated equipment. Knowledge of operating specialized park maintenance/power equipment. Knowledge of City Parks and other properties maintained by the parks division. Knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in computer systems and related technologies. Additional Job Requirements (to be obtained within six months of job acceptance): Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Michigan CDL, Class "A," with airbrakes endorsement. Confined Space Training Forklift Operator License Platform Operator License Backhoe, excavator, and front-wheel loader operator license CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications are required. Ability to obtain and maintain a Michigan Department of Agriculture Pesticide Certification in categories 3A (Turfgrass Pest Management) and 3B (Ornamental Pest Management). PHYSICAL/MENTAL/VISUAL DEMANDS Environment : Exposure to outside environment and on-site activities, including exposure to confined spaces, obnoxious smells, fumes, airborne particles, uneven ground, elevated work platforms, underground spaces, and inclement weather conditions. Must wear personnel protective equipment (PPE) when required. High degree of manual labor for sustained periods of time
Physical: Work involves standing, walking, climbing, sitting, kneeling, twisting, stooping, and squatting on a regular basis. Overhead work, work above ground, at heights, and work in confined spaces is required. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Requires finger dexterity, use of hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
Vision : 20/20 corrected. Ability to distinguish colors appropriately. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
