TYPE OF RECRUITMENT: Open Competitive Job Opportunity ABOUT THE COURT Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 40 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,500 full-time Court employees. The Court has an annual budget of more than $855 million. Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County is geographically one of the nation's largest counties, covering 4,084 square miles and, with over 10,400,000 residents, is also one of its most populous counties. ABOUT THE POSITION
Paralegals assist Court attorneys to provide legal services for the Los Angeles Superior Court, including its Self-Help Programs, Family Law Facilitator's Office, and/or other Court-based programs. Under the review of a supervising attorney, Paralegals lead workshops and provide educational information and materials to the public concerning legal matters; assist self-represented litigants with completing legal forms; and provide information to the public regarding community organizations and agencies that provide relevant legal services for self-represented litigants. These services are provided by Paralegals both in-person and remotely. Some Paralegal work may be scheduled as telework to be performed from home, and other Paralegal work may be scheduled to perform onsite in courthouse locations.

To qualify, you must meet one (1) of the following options at the time of filing: Option I: A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.


Option II: A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester units (or equivalent) in law-related courses. The institution must be accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.


Option III: A Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree from an accredited four-year college or university -AND- one year of full-time, law-related experience including researching legal issues and drafting legal documents under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years, or who has practiced in California courts for at least the preceding three years.


Substitution: Three years' full-time experience at the Court at the level of a Court Services Assistant III or higher may be substituted for the required one year of full-time law-related legal experience under this option.


Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with self-represented and low-income litigants. Experience in legal case types in which there are a high volume of self-represented litigants, especially domestic violence, family law, and unlawful detainers. Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, in other languages in addition to English. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
Paralegals must obtain continuing legal education as mandated by California Business and Professions Code Section 6450(d).


A valid California Class C driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Some assignments may require domestic violence training within six (6) months of appointment.


Degree and/or Paralegal Certificate Verification for Options I, II, or III : A legible copy of your paralegal certificate, college diploma -OR- official or unofficial transcripts with the degree posted from the college or university must be submitted at the time of application filing.

- Optional tax-deferred income plan that includes a County match of up to 4% of employee's salary.
Vacation - All permanent and other designated categories of employees are eligible to earn paid vacation based on years of service. Vacation is based on continuous service and credited at the completion of each consecutive six-month period of employment.
Sick leave - Depending on the length of service and employment categories, up to one day of full pay per month of service is accrued monthly for qualifying service.
Holidays - 14 days per year.

Retirement Plan - A retirement plan is provided to full-time employees.
